Miami has some big contracts to deal with after this year, and in the near future. In 2015, Wallace will be a $12M cap hit, and $13M in 2016/17. Albert will be around $10M per year, with Grimes being the same. Ellerbe will be $10M in 2015, and then $8M for 2016/17.

A #19 pick is ging to cost around $2M a year.

Should our team at least consider this in it's first round pick? That's a lot of cap space which may be able to be replaced.

It should be part of the process yes. We need to make sure we do not end up in cap hell.

Honestly the Wallace and Albert cap hit isn't that bad but the Ellerbe cap hit is.

Yeah, and in larger picture, we have to plan on hopefully paying Tannehill a lot in the next two years. I do not think we will pick based on that but, has to be considered by Dawn and Hickey.

You also have to take into account that the salary cap will go up $20-$25 million in the next two years. If that's the case, even with the Fins hopefully having to sign Tannehill and probably Pouncey to long term deals, they should be fine. Especially when more than likely Wheeler will be released after this season.

Depends on the production we get from both for that $22M. Agree on Elerbe, does that make Mosely more appealing?

Well with the cap increasing more and more we will be fine. Until we have to pay tannehill 100 million

Agreed, we are in good shape regardless but, having someone to step in will make it all that much better, depending on production. Wheeler is not a big deal, as he counts $4.4M next year, and we would only save $200K by cutting him, although having a replacement at OLB would be a VG thing.

The most recent financial look incredibly positive. The league is doing better than most anticipated, and the salary cap will be going up significantly each year for the next 3-5 years.

We are in solid cap shape and shouldn't be hard pressed in the future as the cap goes up. We also have fairly easy outs on some of our bigger contracts down the road.

The salary cap is always a concern, but I don't see how it is likely to affect our draft plans this year.

But, someone in the top 10 may want to trade back a little to get a cheaper 5th year rate if they are tight with the cap. I think that is part of the thinking that we might trade up with a team like Minnesota, particularly if they are interested in a QB. Whomever is available at 8 may likely also still be available at 19, and it keeps them ahead of Cleveland's second 1st rounder.

So it might work to our advantage.

Definitely, but as a replacement for Wheeler. The Fins could draft Moseley, Skov or Shazier and move Ellerbe outside. Wheeler could then be released after this season.

It's not the money they would save, it's the better production that would help!

I'm with ya. The overall cap space is of little concern. However, let's use Ellerbe as an example. He will cost $10M next year, IF his performance is close to as bad as last year, he needs to go and we have absolutely nothing to replace him. The cap saving would be an added bonus for an ILB to be drafted high this year, and may have a comparable value if Ellerbe works out, and Wheeler need to go. JMO

True. I'm not sure about Mosley or a guy like Shazier. Wouldn't be upset if we got either one, just not sure if they will be stud LBs. This draft will be interesting!

I doubt any of the players mentioned in the OP finish out their contracts. What we really need is to stop signing high priced free agents like Albert and Wallace, and start developing our own draft picks.

It's very tough to develop players when our HC/FO/Training Personnel is like a game of musical chairs. We haven't had success in that department throughout our dismal last decade....if you want to build a mansion it has to start on some strong foundation. We just keep trying to throw up castles on sand with these FA's....

From your post to the Football Gods ears. We have less than nothing to remotely replace these players.
