DAVIE - Vernon Carey's voice was so hoarse Friday it seemed as if he had just returned from a karaoke marathon. Actually, the usually soft-spoken 340-pound
Dolphins right tackle gave a spontaneous fiery halftime speech during Miami Northwestern's 22-14 victory over rival Miami Central on Thursday night.
Carey, a proud alumnus of Northwestern, didn't like the way
the Bulls had played in a listless first half in which they trailed 14-2, and had two touchdowns called back because of penalties.
"I just went out there and tried to encourage the boys on what they needed to do. That was it," Carey said with a raspy voice. "You got to go in that environment and play with a lot of emotion and passion and those guys didn't have it in the first half, making mistakes and penalties.''
Whatever Carey said seemed to take effect in the second half as the Bulls reeled off 20 unanswered points. It's possible that he got the teenagers' attention when he tossed a Gatorade cooler. He ended up with a purple-splashed Bulls T-shirt.
