The Dolphins like Vernon and want to see him return. But they have identified a handful of pass rush options they believe they can get more cheaply to play at the level Vernon has shown his first four seasons with the team.
William Hayes, a pending free agent from the Los Angeles Rams, is a player the team likes very much. If Vernon walks, Hayes will be an option. Hayes, 30, had 5.5 sacks last season.
The Dolphins have strong conviction about being able to get a comparable -- maybe better player, they believe -- if they lose Vernon based on their experience with Charles Clay in 2015. Last year the Dolphins placed the transition tag on Clay because they didn't think him worth the kind of money he was asking in a long-term contract.

Mario Williams getting released too.

Plenty of better or just as good options at there for half the price.

The Rams have a boatload of money, and the position is a priority for them. Unless they see a need to upgrade, I think he's going to be back with them.

The Dolphins seem content with setting a price on certain players and sticking to them, but there are certain positions that are going to be completely haywire for teams of need. If the Dolphins think defensive end is going to be a friendly position to fill for them this free agency, they may be in for an unfortunate surprise.

Remember, last year they needed linebacker and corner help and the market farted out Kelvin Sheppard and Brice McCain. Those positions are still black holes and we are on the verge of adding defensive end to that list. It's a teensy bit disconcerting.

Only problem with Hayes is he plays the same side as Wake. He's a solid player tho, just not sure how effective he'd be on the other-side. I'd be looking at Plan A Mario Williams, Plan B Robert Ayers. Mario's been a LE most of his career too tho. Robert Ayers makes the most sense from a value standpoint to me.

Wake is 34 coming off of a major injury. He is a pass rush specialist at best right now.

Hayes isn't a every down type player either he will probably give around 35-40 snaps.

NFLRadio was pretty sure tho he would resign with the Rams which i listened to about 2 hours ago.

As a partner with Wake it makes sense, or I guess as a replacement. But that would be significant investment in DE this offseason financially, unless of course we're replacing OV and Wake. Then the link to Hayes makes more sense. I'd rather go after Ayers and either retain Shelby or sign a run down DE like Selvie to play early downs for Wake. Then draft a DE in the first 3 rounds. That's a solid rotation.

Not a Mario fan, He's 31 and had 5 sacks and 15 tackles last year, a contract year. I would bet anyone that OV has more interest and gets a better deal than he does. Guess his agent didn't give him the message.

Good thing about Hayes is at least he did not benefit like OV playing with Suh. He just had Aaron Donald to work with.

There are quite a few defensive ends in the draft that Miami can develop similar to OV, between rounds 3 and 5.

Shelby showed he can be a starter last year. OV is obviously a quality player, but will probably command more money than Miami is willing to offer.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see Miami take the hybrid 4-3 approach, and using a more run-oriented defensive end and getting a solid pass-rushing SLB. Joshua Perry or Jordan Jenkins fit the bill for that mindset.

I'm also not ready to give up on Wake. If anyone can come back from a devastating injury, it's Wake.

It will be interesting to see what base we run but FTM I have us pegged for the Over front from sheer speculation of how Joseph described the LB responsibilities in his presser. The Under front is where the more hybrid roles of LB's come in and he spoke more traditionally. Just a hunch that I'm going with until more details emerge.

And I'm with you on Wake. He's an exceptional athlete with a never quit attitude.

Which is why I dont see the harm in taggin OV with the transition tag.

There really is no harm with transition tag. It's a couple million cheaper than franchise tag, we still get to match any offer. Now we get nothing in return if he leaves but I think we match anything under the 15 million a year range

Even before they place the tag on OV I said we could be drafting a DE at 8 depending on who's there. Even if OV comes back we should draft a DE in the first 3 rounds unless we get someone else in free agency

Is anyone else curious how much truth there is to this report
