Getty Images Given that the Miami Dolphins occupy a spot near the top of the waiver-wire priority (thanks to their 0-3 record), it’s possible that other teams made a claim for the contract of former Texans running back Steve Slaton.
As pointed out earlier today on our Twitter account (but as someone forgot to mention in a post at PFT), no other team made a claim for Slaton’s services.
It means that, if the Dolphins hadn’t submitted a claim, he would have become a free agent. And that he likely would be making far less than his current $1.2 million salary.
Of course, he may not have accepted an offer to join the Dolphins for $1.2 million, or more than that.

The price tag is a big one.

But it just shows that Stephen Ross does not have any kind of directive holding Jeff Ireland back on spending. That was a preposterous notion, one started by people in the organization who are more interested in making it seem like they're not incompetent at their jobs, rather than telling the truth.

Not every team in the league is willing to pay that for their backup 3rd down back. Slaton is talented enough that a team would quickly have picked him up after he'd cleared waivers, but to assume that contract is a hefty price for a backup. It's particularly strange for us since we already have Bush. This is throwing your money around. It completely puts to rest the idea that Ireland has spending restrictions. That we didn't pursue a superior RT or a pass catching TE or any depth. That's on Ireland.

He's worth every penny.. He's better than bush but he makes what? 4 million a yr? Steve slaton is a bargain at that price.. This is Reggies first and last yr here...

I agree that Slaton is better than Bush, but I do think you can create roles for Bush that are worth his contract and worth allowing him to stick around.

Number one, he should be the return man on EVERY kick and punt. We can start there. Number two, he should line up in the slot in 4 WR sets, with Bess in the slot on the other side, a WHOLE lot more, and he should be thrown bubble screens and passes on crossing patterns to get him the ball in space.

I believe the rule is that every team has to spend at least 99% of the cap so why is anyone saying Ross is not spending as much as others? Unless I'm worng, every team will pretty much spend the same?

Ozzy rules!!

At this point, picking up that salary doesn't really bother me. It's not like there are a ton of guys on the market worth spending that kind of money on, so you can't really say 'oh no, now we can't afford so and such...', I know that we have needs other than RB, but who is on the market currently at those positions? Slaton has some potential and he showed it in his rookie season, he's had some issues since then, but the dude is still young and can still get what he had back (unlike, oh, I don't know....Larry Johnson?). To me it gives us one more option on offense which is something that you can't really have enough of. I also think that Slaton is a good back to have in the Wildcat scheme (if we ever choose to use it) because of his experience with the spread option at WV.

We need to wise up that he was released for a reason.

He had one good season and then a rash of injuries have come close to killing his NFL career.

This is a knee jerk reaction to show that they are doing "something". This again shows the lack of sense that this FO has. They release two veteran RBs thinking that a rookie and R Bush could carry the load. And then found out they can't, which is something most of us fans knew.

So they are trying out 36 year old RBs off the street. And Steve Slaton.

And the fact that we felt that we had to claim him tells us something. And that is that HE WOULD NOT HAVE CAME HERE if it was left up to him.

happy happy, joy joy...................

Should we expect anything less from the baffoon(s) running this organization.

Lol $1.2m for a poor man's Reggie Bush to back up our poor man's Darren Sproles.
