It appears that new owner Stephen Ross'wallet will be somewhat safe this offseason. While Ross has given Bill Parcells and the Tuna helpers the green-light to spend whatever they need to improve this roster, the Dolphins decision makers appear set to bargain shop rather than go top shelf.

Things could certainly change within the next 48 hours, especially if certain AFC East teams enter the picture for certain key free agents. But I've been told by numerous sources at the NFL combine that the Dolphins will be fiscally responsible during the start of free agency.
While I'm told there is high interest in players like Tennessee defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (cough, cough Tampa Bay or Philadelphia), Ravens center Jason Brown (cough, cough, one of the D.C. area teams), and linebacker Bart Scott (anywhere Ray Lewis isn't, and that might include the team where his former defensive coordinator now coaches), the Dolphins' decision makers aren't willing to outbid owners like Washington's Dan Snyder or Dallas' Jerry Jones, which usually overpay to lure the elite free agents of each class.

That means the Dolphins likely won't be the first team Brown, Scott, or Haynesworth visits on Friday. Top tier prospects like those three usually don't make more than one, maybe two visits. So it's unrealistic that Miami will land any of these free agent studs this weekend because they likely will get the offers needed to sign on the dotted line in their initial trips.

This article makes sense, but is also a little bit depressing. I am not expecting a huge FA push, but I hope we don't let someone like Jason Brown slip through our fingers.

No, the article doesn't make sense...because several sources say that they have more money than 19 million...and Jason Brown is a near perfect fit. That being said, if he is re-signed along with Scott...I wouldn't spend money on a top tier guy. I'll be very disappointed if they don't make a serious run at Brown IF he is available.

I hope they know what their doing, and they get some luck on their side. The draft wont land all of our starters.

How is Brown a perfect fit and Satele is not? They are the same height and Brown weighs 20 pounds more. If Satele were to bulk up by 20 more pounds, then he would loose his ability to be so good at pulling. I just don't see the upgrade of Brown over Satele.

Adding Brown, and moving Satele to a guard spot would make more sense to me. But I don't care for that either. I say stick with what we have. Get Smiley, Thomas back healthy. A full offseason under the new 0-line coach and then decide if we need to spend a bunch of money on a FA o-lineman or a high draft pick.

Thats what I've been preaching. We cleared all that cap to build through the draft and keep our good players as our FO has said many times since last offseason. People expecting all these high priced and many unproven big names need to remember Calvin Pace and Alan Faneca from last year. People around here thought it was the end of the world and the majority of poster voted on the poll that the Jets was going to win the East. How did that work out?

I guess you didn't see Brown when he handled Haynesworth, Hampton, Jenkins & Ratliff last year. He did most of that by himself, with a little help against Haynesworth. He's also got longer arms, and even if Satele bulks up, doesn't mean he'll be as strong at the point of attack.

I dont get it, didn´t Miami just make Carey the highest paid RT in the NFL? I think Omar is confused about our Cap. I have read that we were 30 mill under. Carey counts as 5mill this year so that is roughly 25 mill under. Were he is getting 19 I have no clue.

I don't get how you guys are ready to write off Satele after a very solid rookie year. Last year, he had 2 backups on either side of him. He played with a torn labrum half the year. And had a position coach change in the middle of the year.

He struggled against Vince Wilfork during his rookie year as well. A torn labrum doesn't affect one all that much; I've had one - it's not as bad as you think. I think the torn labrum issue is overplayed - even that diva Chad Johnson played with one the whole season.

Jason Brown is a far better C in this scheme than Samson Satele. Sam just isn't a power guy; which is what you need, especially in the AFC East. He might be a good fit at LG until Justin Smiley is ready, but he's better suited for an offense that can get him in space.

Although I am a big fan of Jason Brown's game on the field, I will not be so disappointed to see Jason be lost in free agency to another team. Our line did better than expected last year and we should continue to build on this year with the resources we have in advance. Should it happen that we could get a type like Jason Brown, so it is just a bonus in itself. I would be more than happy, but realistic Im not so sure that we actually get him. But I hope!!

Samson Satele was not good last season, but he clearly deserves another chance. He is still young and could have a great future for this team.

I say forget Haynesworth, i read an article saying he may get 40 million in BONUSES. Forget Ray Lewis, hes old.

If we make ANY signings, ill be soooo happy if its just Jason Brown, Leigh Bodden, and Bryant McFadden. 2 CBs we could surely use, and a Center to ensure our OL is good for this year.

Id be happy if we got Bart Scott too, but i dont see it happening. If we must sign one big name FA and give lots of money to, itd be Jason Brown. Therefore at the #25 spot in the draft, we dont need to worry about OL.

I would rather get a C via FA if we have to get one. LB's, S's, CB, and WR are much bettre value in this years draft IMO. With 3 first day picks I beleive we could solve major holes immediately at those positions.

The major problem with Samson is the division he plays in.
AFC East is 3-4 happy with ELITE NT's.
Wilfork, Jenkins, and Stroud (Buff plans on going 3-4 a bit next year)
Samson has proven he cannot handle these elite NT. Therefore we either double team (exactely what a 3-4 wants) or we go out and drop a ton of money (or a 1st round pick) on an elite center.
I vote the latter.
I think Samson is a good C, he is just up against the best NTs, in our division.
Guard may suit him very well.

Just some interesting nuggets, including one regarding Jason Brown. http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/2009/02/diner-morning-news-16/

Here's another tidbit from ESPN's John Clayton. Note #'s 2 & 3. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=clayton_john&id=3930611

In reading the first link, it states Miami will strike at midnight. It goes on to state that Brown may be the highest paid center by the end of the week. Then there are other reports that say we are going to be bargain shoppers. This is classic Parcells and old school football. Nobody knows what we are going to do. There's a lot of smoke and mirrors at this time of the year.
