It appears that new owner Stephen Ross'wallet will be somewhat safe this offseason. While Ross has given Bill Parcells and the Tuna helpers the green-light to spend whatever they need to improve this roster, the Dolphins decision makers appear set to bargain shop rather than go top shelf.
Things could certainly change within the next 48 hours, especially if certain AFC East teams enter the picture for certain key free agents. But I've been told by numerous sources at the NFL combine that the Dolphins will be fiscally responsible during the start of free agency.
http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_football_dolphins/2009/02/sparano-pleased-with-dan-henning.htmlWhile I'm told there is high interest in players like Tennessee defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (cough, cough Tampa Bay or Philadelphia), Ravens center Jason Brown (cough, cough, one of the D.C. area teams), and linebacker Bart Scott (anywhere Ray Lewis isn't, and that might include the team where his former defensive coordinator now coaches), the Dolphins' decision makers aren't willing to outbid owners like Washington's Dan Snyder or Dallas' Jerry Jones, which usually overpay to lure the elite free agents of each class.
That means the Dolphins likely won't be the first team Brown, Scott, or Haynesworth visits on Friday. Top tier prospects like those three usually don't make more than one, maybe two visits. So it's unrealistic that Miami will land any of these free agent studs this weekend because they likely will get the offers needed to sign on the dotted line in their initial trips.
This article makes sense, but is also a little bit depressing. I am not expecting a huge FA push, but I hope we don't let someone like Jason Brown slip through our fingers.
