Dolphins’ secondary woes due to injuries, poor talent evaluation
Miami
Though the Dolphins’ struggling secondary has been weakened by injuries, we hear that Miami also misjudged the talent it assembled in the defensive backfield. After trading away Pro Bowl CB Patrick Surtain in a cost-cutting move prior to the draft, the Dolphins took a hit when expected starter Will Poole went down with a knee injury in a May minicamp. Miami chose not to make offers to free agents R.W. McQuarters or Ty Law, who are starting for the Lions and Jets, respectively. Now, the Dolphins are left with fourth-round pick Travis Daniels, who has shown promise; Reggie Howard, who has been a disappointment; and aging starter Sam Madison, who has struggled with the team’s new defense. At safety, Travares Tillman, who was a dubious addition and was so shaky in the preseason that Miami signed free agent Lance Schulters to be the starter, replaced Tebucky Jones (out for the year with a torn pectoral muscle) in the starting lineup. Word is the Dolphins are concerned about Tillman’s quiet nature considering that Jones was among the unit’s more vocal leaders.
