Donald Butler is ready to play. Dolphins coach Adam Gase said the linebacker who signed Sept. 13 and practiced with the team for the first time the next day is ready to play this week. He is expected to debut Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. That means Butler is expected to play on both defense and special teams. It is unclear if Butler got any first-team repetitions in practice Wednesday but the opportunity was clearly there. Starting weakside linebacker Jelani Jenkins did not practice Wednesday because he is recovering from knee surgery weeks ago. Jenkins has not missed either of the first two game this season, but the Dolphins want an upgrade available behind him and possibly even an improvement for the snaps Jenkins typically gets. So consider that competition officially started.

I've defended Jenkins before on this board, but his knee injury is really slowing him down. He just doesn't look like he can switch directions well right now, and he seems to be falling off some tackles because he doesn't have his legs up under him to explode through the point of contact.

I wouldn't have minded giving Hewitt an extended audition. If the coaches think Butler is ready, maybe he can also provide an upgrade. Let Jenkins get healthy and then try to come back in the mix.

Hopefully they start him and put Jenkins on the bench. I don't think Jenkins is fully healthy.

Even when healthy Jenkins is not a play maker. He would make a good 4 LB but right now he's number 3 and that's not good

Ozzy rules!!

I was impressed by Hewitt last year. His physical ability matched up very well with almost anyone at the combine but he needed experience and to develop understanding of the linebacker position(s) and assignments. I feel like the physical talent level of our starting linebackers is pretty mediocre, especially now that Jenkins is running at 75% out there.
We have to put our best foot forward this week, as this is 'must-win'. But, that game vs Pittsburgh looks impossible as it is. Might as well experiment then and self-scout.

I can't remember the last time Jenkins made a play. He's always close but rarely makes things happen. Misi to some extent is similar! Kiko just got here. Think about it the only time we've ever made plays on defense is on the DL or secondary. When was the last time an LB has made a play? An int, cause a fumble etc? I'll wait for a response.

Anyone know, where does he fit in best for our 43? I'd think either outside spot

I hope Butler is ready to resurrect his career. We could use him in near-top form.

our LBs have not been play makers since we had Joey Porter I think though I may be forgetting someone. Alonso has 2 fumble recoveries and a QB TKO. That's not bad for 2 games of work but we need some splash plays from the group.

Not just splash plays but also a consistent baseline way above MEH or simply "not totally sucking."

Take this addition plus a Culiver addition at cb and this roster is looking stronger than last year's. Sure you have a running back by committee not as strong at Miller and issues at DE but the rest is much more solid plus a little extra depth. Would have liked to kept Shelby and a couple of others still.

Dansby got a ridiculous contract that was obvious he was going to underperform but in he (and Burnett's) final year here, they both played well... especially Dansby. I remember thinking (and posting) how moronic it was that they cut Dansby after his only really effective season with us. Good ole Jeff Ireland.

Anyways, this LB crew was going to be easily bottom 10 in the league coming into the season and they haven't disappointed. We'll see what happens...

this year is going to be strange.. tunsil looks good, we finally got a mike, we got a rookie corner playing damn well. We look like an improved team talent wise yet the record might not change

This was two years ago as an ILB in the 3-4. Doubtful he has gotten better with age.

Currently, Butler ranks second-to-last in our ILB rankings with a -17.1 overall grade; Butler also ranks near the bottom in Run Stop Percentage for qualifying ILBs, recording a stop on only 4.2% of his run snaps. His Tackling Efficiency in coverage also been a problem with a missed tackle in roughly every four attempts.

The Chargers seemed to have noticed Butler’s struggles, and since the bye week his snap counts have dropped considerably with more of a rotation between Butler, Kavell Conner and Andrew Gachkar. Butler’s two best games this season have come in the last three weeks, so perhaps the competition for snaps is fueling some improvement.

The Chargers have to be hoping for a return to 2011 and 2012, when Butler ranked 16th and 17th respectively in our overall ILBs rankings – and during their streak to the divisional playoffs last year, when he was in the Top 15.

March of this year after getting replaced by a guy we should have drafted. Denzel Perryman

The deal he signed in 2014 was for seven years and $48M. However, according to Pro Football Focus, he was the 51st ILB out of just 60 who were ranked last season. The year before, he was even worse, at 58th out of 60.
