I know its a JLC article and he sucks but the overall point hits home with me. The free agency class is weak and the best teams, in this case the final 4 from 2016, are not active in FA and take care of their own players. You can't build crap without continuity, let's take care of Stills, Jones and Landry. Why overpay for another player but not our own?

Thank you fur telling us it's a JLC article in advance. I'd have been annoyed if I opened it and realized that I gave him a click.

I dont think its about being cheap. It's about maintaining the cap for the future

exactly, it's a biz. The Pats haven't taken care of their own and last I checked it has worked pretty well. You can't keep everybody cause everybody wants to hit the lottery.

It comes down to being smart. With Landry and Parker coming up, we can't pay 3 receivers 10+ million a year, especially with so many other needs. If they can work out a decent contract, fine, but you can't just give a guy whatever he wants. The key is to have cheap in house replacements ready to step in. Hopefully Caroo can be that if we can't retain Stills.

He better be considering what we have up to draft him. Given the way his season ended he better have one hell of a productive off season.

Landry is a must keep. Still is a hope to keep. Big difference between the 2.

Stills isn't a must keep and he's not home grown.

The notion you can't add pieces through other means is idiotic.

There seems to be little disagreement to keeping Jones, Landry, Stills. Sims. The nut to be cracked for these and others is what dollar amount is too much to pay. There seems to be no one wanting to be "cheap," but some (of whom I am one) prefer letting them walk as opposed to overpaying. Personally, I think Jones, Stills, Landry, Kiko are penciled in on Miami's 2018 roster. Simms and Branch, I'm not so sure. The advantage Branch has is the nearly empty DE shelf for 2017. I also agree with the need for continuity, but, keep in mind, every additional $3mm given to resign a player is $3mm less to entice available FAs and there is such thing as OVERpaying. The debate seems to be the "overpay" amount.

Well of course the final 4 aren't going to be too active and keep their own. Their own helped get them to be the final 4 teams in the league. You think the 49ers or Browns are just going to be content with the guys they have now?... in other words, water is wet.

It was more they got there by keeping there own and not depending on free agency than what they're going to do now.

So we'll OVERPAY for a different position of need, because free agency is OVERPAYING, but not to keep our own guys?

Couldn't agree more. Build through draft and continue to develop talent. No need to overspend on the FA market.

Hmmm, don't remember saying that. Let me make an unrealistic projection. A team offers Stills $100mm for 4 yrs. Should Miami overpay to keep their own or is there a price too high? I know, I know, my projection is beyond fiction, but the point is valid. At some point "keeping our own" has a limit. And, for the record, I would NEVER overpay for one of "our own" OR a FA. Which gets me back to my point. The debate isn't over "do we want him" but :at what price?" Both here and in the Dolphin FO, the debate is in the gray area between initial offer and the player's lowest asking price. We've seen it here. "I wouldn't pay over $xmm/yr." Tangentially, my philosophy has long been, in any negotiation, the hungriest party loses. In this case, if 4 teams want Stills, for example, the team offering the most is going to lose. How do I know they'll lose? Actually, I don't. But the actual worth of the contract won't be known for 9 months to 3 years. I CAN say two sides negotiated. One blinked. Yes, there is overpaying and I'm against it. For better or worse, 'baum and Gase know the number they have in mind. I don't.
