By securing our known commodities (Carey,Crowder,Bell) and upgrading at one position (Gabril Wilson), the fins were one step ahead of the game before free agency even started. Doling out big wads of guaranteed money now for players we don't really know (i.e. that haven't proven themselves to this staff and team-mates) is taking a risk that will affect our ability to re-sign our draft successes in the future. Not to mention that this does not foster the "performance = reward" culture that the Trifecta is determined to foster on this team. Thus the sensible signing of Berger (known commodity) vs overpaying for the unkown, unproven Scott or Brown (unproven to us). Ideally, the only players that will get big money are those that are re-signed after proving that they can do it in this system.
Based on last year's draft, we are sure to get at least five solid players , if not more, from the current draft. Not to mention the fact that The Trifecta is nowhere near done making sensible acquisitions through free agency probably well into preseason.
Taking this pragmatic and disciplined approach to free-agency, the Trifecta is ensuring success for the long term. We are trying to build a Dynasty people!! Not a one-hit wonder.

I think what bothers people is hearing the Dolphins involved in these rumors, signing Brown, signing Scott, signing Coles. Then when they don't happen, people get disappointed. I'm with you on not wanting to overpay for people, but when i see a guy like Jason Brown out on the market, a guy who is a solid player right now at a position we need and could be, with his age, for many many years to come, only sign for a deal garnering him about 7 million a year, it angers me that we couldn't get the job done signing him.

Then all these people start drinking the FA Kool-Aid, acting like signing Joe Berger is the greatest thing since sliced bread. That whole "GREAT JOB! WE GOT A SOLID PLAYER AND DIDN'T OVER PAY!" crap is complete garbage, it's the same mentality people had when we signed Ernest Wilford, and signed Sean Ryan, and signed David Kircus and those guys didn't work out well.

The "Trifecta" isn't the Holy Trinity, mistakes can and will be made. It's not outrageous to question their decisions even with the success we had last season.

Also i'm not sure how you can guarantee five solid players from a draft this year based on a draft last year. The draft is as unproven as it gets, and isn't that your reasoning for not signing Scott or Brown?

Dave Wannstache isn't running the show, nor is Jimmy Johnson, Rick Speilman, Nick Satan, or Cam "fail forward fast" Cameron. It's BILL PARCELLS and HIS people running the show. Do we realize he's human and prone to mistakes? Of course; however, the man has already had success turning around four teams over the years. As the mantra goes, "he knows what he's doing." This regime is unlike the regimes over the past decade.

Mr. Parcells has an extensive, proven track record, and we should all be grateful Wayne hired him, so I'm drinking the Kool-Aid, even though it might be bitter once in awhile. :)

We should all have faith in the trifecta, but not deify them. They have made mistakes. Big, 6'4 mistakes. So they leave themselves open for criticism. Is there anyone I'd rather have running our team? Not really. But there's no reason not to debate their decisions.

...additionally, Center is absolutely an offseason priority, evidenced by the fact that the Dolphins were unable to run the ball up the middle successfully on a consistent basis. That being said, since 26 year old, 320 pound, proven veteran Jason Brown was passed on, there's no doubt that the Trifecta will draft a good center in the upcoming draft, which they'll be able to sign for at least half of what Jason Brown got.

Exactly. After all, they did fail to select a QB who was there for the taking with the first pick. Not just any QB, but a guy who will be an elite player in this league for many years. A true franchise guy. All this even after WVDolphan tried to tell them. Oh well. I still trust these guys. They have done quite nicely all in all and they didnt spend that 1st pick on a bum.

God I hope Parcells, Ireland and Sparano are working hard on "shopping for the groceries" this year. I think the Dolphins could be MUCH better than people think for 2009 if we fill the holes we need with some real good FAs and draft picks.

Just maybe big Bill is saving so money, for this summer and try and get
Ronnie Brown sign to an extension.

Try one-third of the money.

Jason Brown's five-year deal was worth $37.5 million, with $20 million guaranteed.

Last year's #25 pick got a five-year deal worth $9.7 million, with $7 million guaranteed. (The slot for the pick should have been about $12 million, but Dallas got a lower total contract value from both its first-round picks in exchange for more guaranteed money.)

A left tackle who makes the Pro Bowl as a rookie is anything but a bum.

And keep in mind that if we had passed on Long at #1, by the time we got back on the clock, the next group of "tackles" on the board included John Greco (started one game for Rams) and Chad Rinehart (played zero games for Redskins) -- both of whom were drafted in the third round and were moved to guard. We're much better off with Long and Henne than with Ryan and a rookie turnstile.

Why are you invested in rumors? You should have realistic expectations. Also, every big name that the Trifecta passed on last year was a bust!!

The signing of Joe Berger added a known quantity to our offensive line depth. Since we lost our playoff game mainly with poor offensive line depth, I think it is a good signing. Also, who said anything about sliced bread.

A new GM like Ireland is going to make mistakes like Wilford. Most moves have been the correct move, so why even bring up a few mistakes? That seems to be nit picking to me.

yes, this is the same thing everyone said about Nick Saban and Cam Cameron. "they know what theyre doing!"

Good point! That does not mean that we are not correct about the Trifecta knowing the correct way to run a front office.

im glad that we were able to get our franchise guy with a late second. so i guess we win.

That may be true but the Tuna has the hardware twice over and a proven track record of success. I am not saying to blindly follow without debate, but I am inclined to listen to and trust what these guys do a far more than those other bums.
