J.D. Robinson might be the only columnist on earth that gives Josh McCown a fighting chance of being something more than a stopgap in Miami. If nothing else, you gotta give him credit for have the guts to make that argument:

How do you all feel about McCown's chances of doing something?

I don't think he is the answer . . . but I wouldn't be floored if his career flourished in Miami. Hell Parcells had guys like Quincy Carter, Hutchinson, and others . . . and tho not great, they started and were better than what I have seen here in recent years . . . McCown is better than those guys . . . it really was a SMART sigining by Parcells . . . and I think anybody thinking he is not in competition to start is being EXTREMELY naive . . . as anybody who is considered a QB on this roster needs to be worked out and in competition to start . . . this is one position, out of all of them, that should NOT be handed to anybody . . . whether a 1st or 2nd round pick, or an undrafted journeyman. This is a reason why I wanted CPep to stay last year . . . not because of him being better or worse than what we had . . . he is another body . . . we need to look at all options at QB.

I think he's the starter for 2008 unless we bring in another vet, Beck showed he wasn't ready last year and I don't think he's the answer personally. I know Parcels wants to bring in his own guy too so Beck is not gonna be our future QB. the new staff pretty much said that the last draft was a mistake by firing everyone who had any say in it

I could make an argument that the world is flat. Would anyone give me credit for that? :)

I have seen McCown play. He makes bad decisions. You could argue his O-lines weren't the best, but people made the same argument for David Carr. We saw how that turned out in Carolina.

I hope Beck is the real deal. I just don't know how long we can wait for him to mature w/o having to acquire another QB (for example our #1 pick this year).

I think Josh can end up being a younger version of Gus Ferrotte, and in case you dont know....Gus has had the best season of ANY QB since Dan Marino.

The funny thing about McCown is that unlike Lemon, Ferrote, Rosenfels or any of the other QBs we've had in, no one really thinks he's the savior of the franchise. I hate to say it, but it's really, really bad when no one is a homer over you because you've proved how bad you are in the NFL. Backup? Fine. Starter? Don't make me laugh.

Not sure how McCown will do in Miami, he has had some bad luck about teams that aquire him. At this point he has proven more than a rookie so there are pretty good odds he will be the starter.

True, but you could also argue that due to the lack of a decent O-Line Carr was required to live on the run therefore he did not have have a chance to be properly groomed. Now he is damaged goods.

Do I think McCown is the answer? No
Would it shock me if he did well here with Tuna? NO

I think McCown has a bit of a shot to get his career on track here with all the posotive rebuilding going on.

Yeah he has been nothing special so far...but he has played with Arizona (who was terrible, but he looked alright at times leading their offense), Detroit, and Oakland.
None of theses teams are ideal places where QBs want to go these days. All his stops so far have been on pretty terrible teams.
And hopefully Miami is in the process of leaving that list of terrible teams now with Tuna & CO.

So let's wait and see what McCown can do here.
And for the record, I still think Beck will work out.

Bill will not pay someone without expecting more from the player than he paid. He wants value for his money. There is a reason. He picked Romo, he saw something there..

he got 3 million a year am I wrong? if he did then he's our starter

My take on the McCown signing is this. He is arguably the toughest SOB to play QB in the NFL. He lacks an arm however. I think Parcells has questions about Beck's toughness. (I know everyone here thinks Beck is a tough SOB but I dont think Parcells is convinced) McCown will be a great example for Beck on how to prepare in practice and the attitude that is required for a QB to play under Parcells.

Did you see the superbowl? Brady look pedestrian behind an Oline that couldn't protect him. As any QB would. Granted, I am by no means anointing him (McCown) as anything more than a journeyman. But many would argue after last season many would've been happier with the journeyman we let go last offseason (Frerotte). I think we draft a QB somewhere in this draft. McCown starts, Beck is the back up, and the rook holds the clipboard.

Interesting angle, but I'm curious as to why you think he's arguably the toughest quarterback in the NFL?

Those things are tough to measure, but I can think of a handful of guys of hand that are tougher than he is. But who knows. It's not like I've spent a ton of time watching him play.
