If the Dolphins offense visited an ophthalmologist, it wouldn't take many tests for a decent doctor to render a diagnosis. It's obvious. The offense has myopia. It's near-sighted. It struggles terribly with distance. Everything beyond 15 yards is blurry; otherwise, it would surely travel at least that far on an occasional play.

So what would the doctor prescribe?

Eyeglasses?

Lasik surgery?

Chad Henne?

If you've listened to some Dolphins fans lately, you've heard a lot of the latter. You've heard that Chad Pennington's lack of arm strength was the primary factor limiting the Dolphins' field usage, and that inserting the stronger-armed Henne would be the same as slipping in the right corrective lenses. Poof! The field would magically expand for the Dolphins, far and even wide, and so would their possibilities.

Maybe my vision's off, even after a fairly recent refractive surgery of my own. . . .

But I simply don't see it.

Pennington's eyes are fine it is his arm that is near-sighted.

Henne wouldn't be slinging it down the field anyway. He's going to have to transition into this role. He's not stepping on the field and becoming the next Dan Marino in day one. We have a strong running game and Henne will rely heavily on that.

I honestly would like to come out with just a play action bomb to Ginn, like we did that one time against the Bills. I really don't care if it falls incomplete (well, I do, but you know.) .. the point is, they'll have to respect the deep pass from that point on, because it's an option for us now. Will we actually execute? Who knows. But a deep pass is a deep pass, and I think our running game will open up a little more for us now that we don't have every damn defender in the box now.

please, please, please have a deep passing attack again (keeps fingers crossed)...

Roethlisberger didn't have to throw it a ton his rookie year..but that Stillers team was more complete than this one.

Still, our running game is as good as any, so I think we can rely on that for the most part.

It's the fact that atempting to throw once down field seems to be good enough for this offense. We need to try it 4/5 times in a game to always keep those safeties honest. It's not like guys (Ginn) isn't getting open down field we're just not even trying to get it there.

Henne is probably going to get blitzed a lot and will not get a ton of time to throw downfield on many plays. SD brought pressure against Henne non-stop until the game was out of reach, and it was pretty effective. Henne needs to show that he can beat the blitz. Ideally the o-line will buy him time on a couple of crucial plays so that he can hit somebody for a big gain, forcing opposing defenses to back off.

Ethan is actually right. Don't look for Henne to be flinging the ball down field multiple times. I won't be surprised to see them run with a enough of a mix of medium range and a few deep routes to keep the defense honest. One thing I think a lot of us overlook is that in the short-med range routes, how much quicker Henne can get the ball there. WRs no longer have to have 2 steps on a defender to be considered open.

Part of the pressure came when Vernon Carey got hurt shortly after Henne came in. If Carey is better, it shouldn't be as big of a problem.

If anyone think Henne is going to start throwing 70 yard bombs down town, then they are sadly mistaken. Our recievers are not field stretchers - apart from Ted, and it will take time for these 2 to work some kind of chemistry.

If anything we are going to see more short passes, Hennings Offense revolves around the short pass, and he isn't going to change that because Henne is now in, if anything its gonna get more conservative until Henne can prove he is comfortable and can make good decisions. The worst thing you can do for a new QB is go out and have him bombing it out, that increase his chances at INT's and thus will hurt his confidence, we will see a more scaled back version of the same offense until Henne can prove he is comfortable and can make good decisions.

Exactly the safeties cheat a few series and bombs away...
