Last year, before the season, Pro Football Weekly listed San Diego as the 32nd best O-line . . . San Diego managed to finish 6th in rushing yards, and LT (who was not completely healthy all year) managed to get over 1300 yards and 17 TDs . . .

Houck can perform similar miracles here . . .

I really hope you are right. As do most of the posters here (minus the other teams' fans).

I think we'll worry until we see some results. At least I will. We've heard Houck can perform miracles. Let's just hope he has a few left in him. I'm cautiously optimistic ...

That is the great thing about the NFL, you never know. I think he should take the O-Line, make them go on dates, hold hands, whatever it takes for them to gel together.

thanks Hudson... I assume you are Mr Houck by your confidence.

seriously though, there is reason to believe that our Oline will be much improved. We've got some decent personnel and Hudson is a great coach. There is good reason for optimism... here's hoping.

That PFW rated Diego that low and the team responded with that much production speaks volumes about both "experts" and coaching. Thanks for the article. It gives us all reason for optimism.

i also think its very possible, its not really a miracle either, our o-line isnt horrible and not ranked as low as the chargers was, its a lot of work but it can be done

I think our O-line is better than advertised. Sure they were pretty bad to start off but near the end they started to gel and play pretty well. I think with Houck now they can take the next step and become great.

As bad as the O-line was last year, there are some talented players...it is all about coaching.

We have the best O-line coach in the game...I think the math is pretty basic. Great coaching = improvement.

agreed. A running game is only as good as the O line. Ask barry sanders and he'll tell you im sure a RB's talent only goes so far when the balls snapped and hes looking at a team picture of the other team. With new backs and suspect ability at QB, its critical the O line gel and dominate...this point by itself IMO will decide whether the 2005 season goes better than 8-8, theres your wild card blog in a nutshell.

I haven't really been worried about the O-Line. Alot of people get caught up in the crap that is being talked about by the experts concerning our O-line and start forgetting who our coach was last year, and more specifically, who our O-LINE coach was. Probably the worst OLine coach in the league (who is still unemployed) When you compare him with Houck and the schemes they run, it is easy to see that our line will improve quite a bit from last year. The offensive blocking scheme was as vanilla as the rest of the offense we ran which put our line at a disadvantage against defenses that were so far more sophisticated that it was like horse and buggy going against a Dodge Viper. We also lacked a RB that could move a pile or create on his own.
This year will be leaps and bounds different. We have some pretty good O-linemen on our squad. Now they have a coach and a scheme that will play to their strengths. We have a coaching staff that will make us more formidable in general and we have a slew of RBs that can wear a defense out.

Agreed. Our O-line coaching and, equally important, SCHEME was horrible. The linemen basically had to make their own decisions about who to block. It was pure disaster. If a person wanted to sabotage a line, they could not have chosen a better scheme. This, with a group of linemen who essentially had never played together before.

At the same time, several of the O-linemen had shown themselves to be solid players elsewhere (James, McDougle, etc.). I think a good system and some confidence will make the line a very good one. The line will struggle early, but will improve.

The biggest worry, imo, is the QB position.
