I know, I know....we played a tougher schedule and we had injuries. Well lets look beyond that and really examine this.
Did we really improve from last season?
Last years team was able to go on a run down the stretch. And while yes they did play weak opponents for the most part, I dont call Buffalo, Tennessee, and Houston powerhouses by any means.
Be realistic. Last years team had their backs against the wall the whole way down the stretch. They, like this years team, played the tougher part of the schedule in the first half of the season.
The difference was last years team took care of business. They went on the road and beat Buffalo. This team didnt.
They beat an upstart 9ers team that had gotten hot at that point of the year. This team lost to the Titans who were playing similar to that 9ers team last year.
Last years team went on the road and knocked out a 9-6(at the time) Jets team to cap things off. This years team lost to a mediocre Houston team at home with it all on the line.
So you can say what you want about the schedule being tougher. I call it a chicken **** excuse. Its ****ing weak.
Reality is, that IF the team improves from last season, you would expect it to post about the same number of wins or at least close to it DESPITE the tougher schedule. After all, if they really get better, they should be able to beat teams that are a little better and therefore post 10 wins or so.
Last years team played with heart and got the job done when it counted. Last year it took all 11 wins to get in. Hell, the Patsies didnt get in with 11. This year there will be two 9 win teams get in. Perhaps 1 nine win team and one 8 win team. No excuse for not making the playoffs if the team really got better.
Lets examine what we really did roster wise.
The defense didnt get any better. Look. What did we really do?
Well we drafted 2 corners. Problem is we failed to resign Goodman. That dude straight up balled down the stretch. Pay him his ****ing money you cheap *******s.
So while we got younger, we didnt get better at all really in the secondary. We also let Hill walk and got Wilson. You call that an upgrade????
Those 4 starters from last years secondary played much better down the stretch after a little time together. We shouldve kept all 4 of those guys. Then you still draft a young player. Sure. Davis is fine. He couldve been eased in with Goodman around and then stepped in when Allen got injured. With Goodman around, we couldve spent that 2nd round pick on another area besides having to take Smith. All we had to do was step up and pay the guy the money he earned.
At the LB spot, we added JT and pretty much swapped out Roth with Wake. Not a big deal really. We pretty much stayed the same.
The DL we did NOTHING really. Changed some depth. We needed to address Ferguson. We shouldve been prepared for his injury. If we get a young guy this year, its one year too late.
So when you look at that, what did we really do that made the defense better? Nothing. We made it worse. Those 2 key injuries and we were worse than last year on D. All because we sucked in FA and because of that had to spend a pick to address a spot we couldve easily done by paying a guy we already had who wanted to stay.
Offensively, aside from adding Hartline, we did NOTHING. We swapped Satele for Grove, which is an upgrade, but dude has been injured. Basically we put in Berger. Henne and Pennington while 2 different players are a wash. Pennington is good to have vs. ****ty teams because he wont turn it over. But, vs. good teams we need Henne's ability to make a big play.
We did NOTHING to upgrade the offense. Basically last years was just as good.
We wasted a 2nd rounder on a total bust in Pat White. Thats it. We got a good break in a 4th rounder on Hartline.
You think that was a good offseason for the FO???? I dont. But, keep drinking the kool aid.
Reality is this team right now if it finishes 7-9 is one win better than when Saban left in his 2nd year. His first year we finished winning 6 straight with a vet QB in Ferrotte. Pretty similar to Parcells and Co.'s first season only we won 11 last year and 9 in Saban's first year. We did play a tougher schedule for sure though in Sabans first year as opposed to last year.
Say what you want but this regimes not done much more than what went on pre Scameron. We took a step back this season as well. We had a terrible offseason and didnt address the areas we needed to.
And now with us losing to bad and mediocre teams down the stretch when other teams keep giving us opportunities to take a playoff spot, it looks as though we have gotten worse from last season. But, some of you act like its a lock that these clowns will make great moves this offseason.
