It's pretty clear that this team will only be rebuilt through a succession of very good drafts, and Saban's ability to draft good players will be the key.

Has anyone done a round by round draft analysis of Saban's first draft?

None of the rookies seem like real standouts, except Brown, who's been terrific.

Thoughts about this would be appreciated.

oh yeah, and except for crowder and daniels, too. but other than that.......in other words, you're wrong

Crowder / Daniels have been decent. They've both shown future promise, and have both been solid picks IMO. As for Roth, unfortunately he looks like a bust. He's just way too small to be playing on the DL. Move him to OLB, and you may have something, but as a DE he's worthless....

PHINZ RULE!!!!

Crowder's been a "standout"?

Really 120? Is he being mentioned as a rookie of the year candidate? Is Daniels? I missed that.

The above post is right. "Decent."

Easy, dude, I was soliciting opinions, not trashing Saban.

Geez.

Let's see Crowder is a starter, so is T-Dan.

Vickerson was showing promise till the injury, Roth is playing behind two Pro bowlers.

Manny and Alabi are the only two who haven't suited up but, are still very raw.

all in all this was a better draft than any of Dave/Rick's.

dude...there are 220 rookies in the league. 2 win rookie of the year. having the possibility to win 1/2 of the rookie of the year awards and finding 3 immediate starters and a few role players in 7 rounds is not bad

I didn't say it was bad!

No, it's not bad.

3 starters is good---if your team is halfway decent.

We are awful.

Your definition of "standout" means they have to be considered a ROY or Pro Bowler?

If Saban had that ability to score on of those in every pick he would be making a kigilion dollars a year.

No...

Look at JJ's first draft and compare it with Saban's.

Better or worse?

UH..in that case give Sabans players 3 years in this league before you declare them anything.

I haven't declared anything.

Geez, can you guys read?

I was asking for honest opinions. I do not know if this draft was good or not, beyond Brown! Given that you've banked Brown, who's probably the ROY, it's a good draft.

You'd think this thread was titled, "Saban SUCKS! Can't draft CRAP!" with some of these responses.

Good Lord. Lighten. Up.

When your 1st, 3rd, and 4th rounders are starters in their rookie year and playing well, you had a good draft. Roth still needs time to develop. Vickerson, Alabi, and Wright are projects, we'll need a couple more years to make a decision on them.

Compared to other teams i think we had a pretty good draft so far..
just check out the other AFC east teams.. Jets had the worst draft of all time..
Nugent cant kick a 20 yard feild goal and justin miller their top pick is a liability no matter what he does...

Saban did a great job.. whether or not roth comes around..

Dallas is the only team in the nfl that i can actaully notice having an insane draft..
Us , Cleveland and Cincy i see as not far behind!

The guy knows what he is doing

Let me give it a whirl, then.

1st Ronnie Brown- Fantastic, so far. He looks like a franchise quality runningback. Runs hard every time he gets the ball, and shows more moves then your usual 230+ pound back. He'll fight to move the pile better then most players I've seen. He's made some fantastic blocks, and he looks like a good reciever. By my count, he's had at least two one-handed catches.

2nd Matt Roth- Basically playing DE on running downs only. Unspectacular. He doesnt have jaw-dropping moves to get to the quarterback. Personally, I'm under the suspicion he is being groomed to bulk up and become a DE/DT in the mold of Carter/Holliday/etc.

3rd Channing Crowder- He looks like he has all the physical skill. He's fast, he'll lay wood, he can hold up at the point of attack... But he's made some bonehead decisions in basically every game. He'll overpursue and get out of position and leave cutback lanes open, and will blow coverages. I think he's got a future, but he needs to wise the hell up.

4th Travis Daniels- Looks to be solid but unspectacular at this point. He is a nickel-quality corner so far, IMO. He has done a solid job. He's been burned, but it seems like not as much or as blatantly as Howard or Madison. His big problem seems like he wont fight for the ball.

5th Anthony Alabi- Who knows? Project.

2006 5th- Manuel Wright- Didnt show me a whole lot in preseason. He made a nice tackle in the backfield in one game, but other then that, who knows? It's hard to tell. Project.

7th- Kevin Vickerson- About the same as Wright, except being injured instead of inactive. He's a project, no doubt.

1 Ronnie Brown A+
2 Matt Roth F
3 Channing Crowder B-
4 Travis Daniels B
5 Anthony Alabi F
7 Kevin Vickerson F

This is a fricken Joke It seems that the 1st, 3rd and 4th picks are the best of the draft it seems to me maybe we should get A free agent QB, T,G,S, FS, WR, and FB then draft a 1ST round WR 2nd Round QB 3rd Round MLB 4th Round OLB 5th Round T 6th Round G 7th Round S this is what i see . I dont care what others think it's my opinion and if we are going to contend we need to get the best free agent players to get the job done.
