With the draft coming up, a lot of us are going through permutations that include the Dolphins trading up/down.
For those curious what we'd have to give up or get for such trades, here's a useful link to a 2003 Gil Brandt article that shows a Value Chart used by most teams to assess the value of each pick in the draft.
http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/6330687
The chart is used to assess how to trade picks-for-picks.
So, for example, if the Phins move up from #9 to #7 what would they have to give? The answer, based on the chart, is the #9 pick plus a third round pick (assuming we have the ninth spot in the third round of the draft. Usually it alternates by round so if you pick ninth in round one, you pick ninth LAST in round two, but ninth again in round three).
I'd love to see the Phins trade up for Joe Thomas if he miraculously falls as low as #7. But, if he only falls to the fifth pick, we'd have to give up our #9 AND our second round pick. Not worth it, in my opinion. Especially as Randy Mueller's history is to make great early round picks and not so great later round picks.
Hope this helps you prep for the draft better.
