Just wondered if anyone knows how when a new franchise joins the NFL like say when the fins did in 66, or say whent the Texans joined a few years back, how they got the players? did they get like 53 picks? or what order or how did players 1st become on the squad. not sure how that worked?

just a question that i thought about today as the draft is aproaching. :err:

They get the 1st pick in the draft and each round plus a few extra picks towards the end of the draft, but they also get to select some players from each team that they dont protect. I dont understand all the details about it but i know the Texans got OT Tony Boselli from Jacksonville there 1st year.

An Expansion team automatically gets the first pick in every round the the NFL Draft.

There is for an expansion team, actually TWO drafts. The first one occurs I believe in February, and the second one obviously in April.

The one in February is creatively called the "Expansion Draft". Each current NFL team has to put up 5 of its current players into a pool that the expansion team can choose from. So, if the league decides to add a 33rd team someday, they will have a pool of 165 veterans to choose from. The league likes the expansion team to select around 30-40 players in that draft, but they don't have to if they don't want to. Actually, the Texans only selected 19 players in their expansion draft.

The kind of players that get put up for the expansion players are usually older players with high salaries that are probably going to be released/traded anyways. For example, if their was an expansion draft this season, Miami probably would have put up players like Trent Green, Zach Thomas, L.J. Shelton, etc.

Most of the players come from an expansion draft, where teams protect a certain amount of players and leave the rest available. Then the expansion team is usually given the top pick (or close to it) in each round of the draft.

I'm pretty sure that in addition to the draft picks, they can pick up free agents like any other team would.
