3,4,6,7 all at the top of each round.

I say the Fin will be reward 2 compensation pick a 6th, 7th round (imo)

I don't understand how that works... (compensation) why whould we receive those?

very difficult to explain the formula WHY ? b/c no one know what it is

But it has something to do with signing free agent
and if you lose more then you sign you are award a pick or picks

This is what we currently have:

1st round (1)
2nd round (32)
2nd round (57) - From San Diego
3rd round (64)
4th round (96)
6th round (158)
7th round (190)

As mentioned above, this is before the 32 compensatory picks are handed out. The league hands out those 32 compensatory picks in rounds 3-7. There is no set number of which ones will end up in which round. Ten picks could end up one year in round 3, while the next year round 3 only gets one. Those picks are given to teams that lost more valuable free agents then they signed the previous years. To qualify for the formula, you need to have lost more then you signed. However, it has to be Free Agents. That means, players traded don't count, players released don't count. Actually, some actual free agents don't always qualify. The exact formula is one of the biggest secrets in the NFL. No one knows for sure how it is done.

Another thing about the draft, is that the new CBA requires there to be at least 255 selections each year. 32 selections for each team in 7 rounds, plus the 32 compensatory picks. That total equals 256 selections. However this year, three teams have forfeited selections, the Patriots, the Bengals and the Ravens. The drops the total down to 253, which is below the required amount. To fill those two slots the league pretends that there is an 8th round and starts from the beginning. So, in this fictional 8th round, Miami would select first, and St. Louis would select 2nd. What does that mean? It means Miami will have the 254th selection of the 7th round and the Rams will have the 255th pick in the 7th round and conclude the draft.

So while Miami technically only has 7 picks as of this day, we will have at least one more since they need to fill out the draft.

As for the numbers I posted above, the picks in round 1-3 are set. Rounds 4-7 will shift a bit once those compensatory picks are handed out.

Thank you for the very definition that explains it way better. I had a hard time figuring out what picks we got and were at least overall so thank you.

Josh, you never cease to amaze me...So, after ignoring your wonderful insight to the "Comp" picks, do you think we get any this year?

Thanks bro

Another thing I wanted to mention about the order itself:

Since Miami was the only team to go 1-15, they will always pick in the same spot in the round, same goes for the Rams who were the only team to go 3-13. What would happen though if multiple teams finish with the same record? Since the 4-12 teams are a little shaky with the whole coin flip thing right now, lets look at the 8-8 teams.

This is the 1st round order for the 8-8 teams:

16. Arizona Cardinals
17. Minnesota Vikings
18. Houston Texans
19. Philadelphia Eagles

How was the above order decided? It was by SOS(Strength of Schedule) The team with the worst SOS, or lowest winning percentage of their opponents, picks first and so on. The Cardinals SOS was .434, the Vikings was .504, the Texans was .516 and the Eagles was .563. That is how the 1st round is done.

Now for the second round, the order changes. The team at the front of the line(Cardinals) move to the back of the line and all the other teams move up. So the order in the 2nd round is as follows:

Vikings
Texans
Eagles
Cardinals

Then it just keeps doing that for the rest of the draft. The third round:

Texans
Eagles
Cardinals
Vikings

....and so on....

It is like that for all teams with the same record.

We definitely qualify for the formula, something we haven't done in many years. I highly doubt we will get our hands on something like a 3rd or 4th round pick. As mia4ever predicted, I think we will get one in the late rounds(6th or 7th).

Ok i understand now! Thank you, you really made it easy too.
