Draft Spotlight: OLB Sergio Kindle - Texas

i have always like him as a player. i dont like him at 12, and dont think he'll last to 44 so im kinda torn. I would love to pick up Spoon or Earl Thomas and than pick him up 44 ish, but dont see him lasting imo.

Nice write up and video.

I agree, not at #12. Maybe not even at #44. No thanks, we already have Charlie Anderson.

I would take Kindle if he is available with #44. I think he's a major upgrade over Charlie Anderson. How can he not be.

Sergio Kindle has been a somewhat hotly debated player in terms of his ability to play for the Dolphins. As usual, this contains video of said player.

Absolutely excellent analysis of Kindle and IMO the best one you guys have done yet....I agree with every single word...

He's not nearly the speed rusher that Orakpo was and doesn't use his inside arm and shoulder and doesn't bend the arc like Orakpo....doesn't use his hands well and relies more on athletic ability and strength than technique....he definitely needs coaching up to be a weakside pass rusher and learn some moves/techniques....all Rak needed was a counter move or two to be a 10+ sack a year player...

Kindle is stiff hipped and has to flail his arms all over the place and gather himself in order to change direction in space....he just doesn't do it natural or smooth...

His instincts and read/react skills are what he relies on...

I dedicated a quick paragraph or two on my observations of Kindle a month or so ago in one of these threads around here and it was very similar to this...

He needs to get stronger in his lower body....upper body strength is above average...he won't play DE in the NFL IMO because I don't think he can hold up against NFL tackles in the run game for 16 games.....he's too light and doesn't have the lower body strength...but gets all he can from it by playing with such a sound base...

Best fit is as a OLB in a 3-4 IMO.....but as for a lot of these guys....they'll either prove they can make the transition and be good at it or they'll be situational players in the NFL....

Guys like Brandon Graham, Derrick Morgan, etc....will at worst be excellent 4-3 DE's if they can't make the transition to OLB.....I don't see that as the case for guys like Kindle, Hughes, etc...

Other then Hughes and Kindle both being fast they really don't have much in common.

Kindle is a Charlie Anderson like PALMA said.Their is much more to Hughes game then just being a speed rusher.

3rd round value imo...whether you view him as a weak or strongside backer...he's got deficiencies for both spots where i wouldn't take him before #74

not strong enough vs the run or in the lower body for the strongside...not enough pass rush moves or hand usage for the weakside...

i see a guy who gets things done primarily at this stage based on athletic ability...but i see upside also

i agree, I like Kindles upside, but at this point, i wouldnt take him in the 2nd. hes a 3rd rounder to me, but he has a lot of potential to be good in this league. could be one of those steals in the 3rd round that plays at a high level a couple years after being drafted. hes definitely not a immediate impact player IMO though.

Kindle plays very well in space and is a tremendous pass rusher but he is soft against the run. In our system he is a 3-4 Weak Outside Linebacker.

I'm glad you saw took the time to read the post Hoops. as we were having a brief discussion about before. The video illustrates some of the things I mentioned, it is always easier to show people than to describe in black and white.

In the end he'll likely be a second rounder due to the burst and strength at the POA. If Gholston can go Top 10, then I think Kindle certainly goes in the Top 45. If he tests poorly he could drop, but I think he'll test well enough but struggle in the individual drills - like where they backpedal and drive on the ball.

You think he does? I'm not saying you're wrong, but he wasn't asked to drop much at all at Texas IIRC. You think he looks fluid in that video.

Now, obviously that is not every play he's ever made, and he'll look better at some points than others, but honestly he looks very mechanical to me when he is asked to change directions.

he probably would go top 45 or so but i personally wouldn't take him at #43 for us...i'd go elsewhere...i want our top 2 picks at least to be immediate major contributors and i see kindle now as a developmental project...

nice work again...keep 'em coming

Jerry Hughes is next.

The only thing they have in common is that if they can't make the transition to full time stand-up linebacker and be good at it....neither of them will have a true position in the NFL IMO....because neither of them can hold up in the run game at DE for 16 games....

Especially Hughes...he's a liability versus the run...Patterson has him play in a 4-point stance when he's not pass rushing just to keep from being driven off the ball in the run game...

Hughes is strictly a weakside guy IMO....but I think he'll make a stud standup weakside pass rusher if he learns to hand fight a little better....changes directions MUCH better than Kindle...a lot less rigid in the lower body...
