Drafting Ronnie Brown wasn't a waste as long as he becomes capable of playing at the level of hype surrounding him. The better statement would be that drafting Ronnie Brown might not have been the best move for the short term turnaround for this team.
As I frequently voiced prior to the draft, I felt that taking a RB at #2 is a bad move. The role of the RB is changing in the NFL and isn't as critical to have top skill at as it used to be. At the same time, the role of the QB is increasing and requires maximum skill. Because of this, I was desirous of taking a top QB prospect or trading down for more picks.
Unfortunately, barring some major change of events our QB situation is dismal, and our OL isn't much better. We now have major money tied up in the RB position that will be unable to produce behind the current OL. This means we will have to upgrade at QB and OL this offseason, leading to yet another potential high round pick at offense with high pick money and a potential multi-year learning process for a new QB. By the time the offense has settled around Brown, he will likely have 3 seasons of excessive wear and tear behind this OL...potentially wasting the best part of his career.
Brown has lots of talent and may have been the BPA, but the timing of the pick in the Dolphin's development timeline is what makes it so dubious. Ronnie has tremendous potential, I just worry about it being wasted in the current offense.
