  • The Dolphins could use some depth at tight end, and head coach Adam Gase has had success when featuring tight ends in his offense (like Martellus Bennett in Chicago and Julius Thomas in Denver). Fortunately, this year’s draft will be particularly deep at that position, and ESPN.com’s James Walker notes that the Dolphins could snag a tight end in the second round or later.
  • Walker also passes along quotes from draft guru Mel Kiper Jr., who explains the types of tight ends the team could expect to take in the later rounds. “You got to take advantage of the depth at that spot,” Kiper said. “A kid I think can be really good is Cole Hikutini out of Louisville. If you can get Hikutini in the third or fourth round, I think that will make a lot of sense… They can get the linebacking help and they can get the tight-end help in this draft.”

Does anyone know about Cole?

Would love to get OJ Howard but our defense is fricken swiss cheese. We just have too many damn holes on defense to spend our 1st round pick on Howard. Our defense is a 3 year rebuild imo.

We have a lot bigger needs than TE

I would never force a need pick in the draft if there is clearly a better option available at another position of less need. If Howard falls to Miami at 22 it would be hard for me to imagine there would be someone more talented than him available at that point in the draft. I am not saying that a team should ignore a need, but they should weigh it against how talented a player is.

May not be the highest priority however as a team we need to be prepared in case a player is available when we pick.

cole would be a pretty good pick up for a 3rd or 4th (if we get one). I'm a UofL fan and the kid would be huge for us. maybe not year one, but he has all the skills you want

This is a deep TE class. I'm not sure the guys being spoken about as 1st rounders are actually worth 1st rounders, but I'm in the minority on that one. There are a lot of solid to good TE prospects.

Personally though, I'd rather go after a marquee guy, Jimmy Graham. Because of his salary we might be able to trade for him for far less than you might expect. Seattle has cap issues. This would give us an ideal TE and allow us to use the draft for other positions. This solid TE class lowers the price to get Graham I'd think.

If we get a comp pick in the late third round I'd absolutely grab this kid. Pair him with Sims and your set for the next 4 years.

Considering, how much a quality TE advances the quality of our offense, I somewhat disagree. We really need LB help, we again need to find a quality Guard, we need to find a better slot corner, and we do need a more consistent pass-rusher.

If when we draft one of the top TE is still there, but there is no equal talent at LB, O-line, or DE, it may not be so crazy if they go TE.

Way back when, Miami and New England made opposite decisions that would affect each of their seasons.

Offseason before last, the Dolphins bought Dustin Keller, and while he was proving his worth with tremendous catches in pre-season, someone shredded his knee like breakfast cereal. Instead of getting another TE, the Dolphins foolishly stood pat. This past offseason, they got Jordan whatshisname, with the concussion history. Guess what? Concussion. Instead of getting another TE, they foolishly stood pat. AGAIN.

Dion Sims is 6'4"/262lb/35" vertical. Sims had 18rec/187yd/1td in 2015; he had 26rec/256yd/4td last season.

Despite having Gronk, possibly the greatest TE in the league and one of the most prolific Receivers, Belichick went into the FA market and bought himself a Martellus Bennett. I advocated at the time that we sign this guy, but...NO.

Martellus Bennett is 6'6"/275/LONG arms/34" vertical. Bennett doesn't get outjumped nor outmuscled by ANYONE. Bennett had 55rec/701yd/7td this season. Bennett's mere presence in the Patriots' game plan causes Defensive Coordinators to account for him.

I promise you...no Defensive Coordinator in the country is sweating Dion Sims.

Martellus Bennett is playing in the Super Bowl. Now, mind you, Martellus Bennett is just one part of a powerful New England Offensive machine. But make no mistake—he's playing in a Super Bowl because Bill Belichick knows the value of an overpowering, overwhelming TE who can score. In fact...he knows THE VALUE OF HAVING TWO OF THOSE.

That concludes today's lesson on "The Power of the Monster TE In the Modern Game." Thank you.

PS: the New England Patriots carry the second-highest amount of salary cap space in the AFCE into 2017. Right behind us.

I'd love to have David Njoku or Howard if the right defender is not there when we pick then heavy on defense the next three rounds.

They could both be difference makers and a QB's best friend.

Njoku has the right combination of grit and skill (with speed) that could result in a long NFL career. We'll see what his measurables really are at the combine. Is he at the Senior Bowl or the Shrine Game? I have to check.
