TAMPA - New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees said he didn’t realize he needed only 16 yards to break one of the most impressive record in sports.
But Brees is glad he didn’t know Dan Marino’s record for passing yards was so close with one play left in the Saints’ season.
“I might have been the only one of the sideline who didn’t know,” he joked. “I though maybe we were 50 to 100 yards away.”
If he’d had known, Brees might have been tempted to break Marino’s mark of 5,084 passing yards set for the AFC champion ‘84 Dolphins.
After all, Brees could have completed one more pass against a prevent defense, rather than try for an impossible touchdown toss facing 1st-and-10 from the New Orleans 35 with one second remaining in a Week 17 loss 33-31 to Carolina.
“That record is not meant to be broken by an 8-8 team,” Brees said Wednesday. “It’s not meant to be broken on the last play of the game when I throw a 20-yard completion and the guy gets tackled and we lose.”
