TAMPA - New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees said he didn’t realize he needed only 16 yards to break one of the most impressive record in sports.

But Brees is glad he didn’t know Dan Marino’s record for passing yards was so close with one play left in the Saints’ season.

“I might have been the only one of the sideline who didn’t know,” he joked. “I though maybe we were 50 to 100 yards away.”

If he’d had known, Brees might have been tempted to break Marino’s mark of 5,084 passing yards set for the AFC champion ‘84 Dolphins.

After all, Brees could have completed one more pass against a prevent defense, rather than try for an impossible touchdown toss facing 1st-and-10 from the New Orleans 35 with one second remaining in a Week 17 loss 33-31 to Carolina.

“That record is not meant to be broken by an 8-8 team,” Brees said Wednesday. “It’s not meant to be broken on the last play of the game when I throw a 20-yard completion and the guy gets tackled and we lose.”

Brees is complete class all the way. He should have been a Dolphin.

yeah, tell me about it...

I always rooted for Purdue in Big Ten, i remember him as a Boilermaker...
His growing pains in San Diego, and then a stellar year.. I remember when Miami was the top destination for a QB that year, we were getting either Brees or Culpepper... I hoped for Brees the whole way... It's a shame CPep played like trash... I go to UCF now, and even though we didn't get Brees i still thought CPep would be good.
Sigh...
If only we had Drew Brees...
Then he could break Marino's record, as long as we won the SB that year...

I live in Vikings country and believe me I heard the news within seconds of trading for CPep. I was at work and literally collapsed when Viking nation poured into my office to tell me through their laughs. I knew it was a disaster immediately. I still to this day do not know what Saban was thinking by trading a 2nd round pick for him instead of just outright signing Brees. Both had medical concerns and questions. Only one had no mental capacity or leadership questions. It was a complete no-brainer to me.

Yes, time to move on, and we all have, but wow.

All my in-laws are Vikings fans (live in White Bear Lake, MN) and so I watched just about every game of Culpepper on DirectTV with my wife. I thought he sucked for years!!! I knew as soon as he made the trade that he was a mistake...I can't believe there are people out there who still think he could play on a team...

I think the last time I posted here, Culpepper was the QB... just came out of my Fin Heaven Coma.

He was done when we got him. The only thing he's done since shredding his knee was what he did to us with the Raiders. One game. Wow!

Hang it up, Duante!

LMAO at my sig... forgot about that. Should probably change that right away, eh? LOL!

Still here... under a foot of snow, and counting.

Yeah, last post was June of '06... wow.

didn't you tell me once you know tom brunette? he used to teach guitar at the house of guitars - bought my first guitar there - he used to live right across the street from me on bay rd.

The story is misleading. The last play of that game was drew brees trying to complete about a 20 yard pass to beat the dans record. The story leads you to believe he threw a hail mary, not true. I would have taken drew brees over jamar flecher and daunte any day. This is the mistake I think led saban to bama.

Drew Brees over Jamar Fletcher! Are you insane? Fletcher's a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame when he retires.

Gawd, it's depressing when you think of some of the decisions which have been made in the past. Still, historically, they're more than evened up.

The fletcher pick upset me more than any other pick I can remember.I can understand why saban did not sign brees. He was really at the mercy of the doctors advice.

Eddie Moore and Fletcher picks stand together heads and tails above the Ginn selection... The Drs. blew it..., the are still in practice...

My opinion the mistake he married the wrong lady who didn't have stomach for the NFL
