DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke forward Josh McRoberts declared himself eligible for the NBA draft Thursday.

"I am extremely grateful for the opportunities that I have had here at Duke," McRoberts said. "This was a difficult decision, but I feel it is the best one for me and my family at this point in time. I will miss Duke, the coaching staff and my teammates, but it has always been goal of mine to play in the NBA."

He scored a career-high 22 points in his final game at Duke, a 79-77 loss to Virginia Commonwealth in the first round of the NCAA tournament. That was the Blue Devils' fourth straight loss to end the season.

While it's never something you can rule out anymore, this was a surpise to me.

not a suprise to me at all. Soe mgt lable him an underachiever, and for awhile I did, but in talking to guys that run Draftexpress, I became convinced he just didn't fit Duke's system.

Coach K's current system is built to make the guards look strong, and to have one big man to take up space and use his strength. McRoberts is not a great fit for Duke's system. His best attributes are his athleticism and his passing ability (fr most of the year he lead Duke in assists).ad he gone to a school that runs a system where his passing ability would be more valueable, he would've/could've been dominant.

Now I don't think he'll go top 5, probably not top 10, but the end of the lotto is not a stretch. Teams like Golden State (need rebounds and passing), and Phoenix (has 3 picks) are two teams I see targeting McRoberts. Hell, I've been picturing McRoberts in a Phoenix uniform for months now.

He'll be a good player in the NBA. He'll never be an All-Star, or a number 1 option, but he'll be around for a long time.

Dumb decision by him to come out this year. With Oden, Durant, and Big Baby in the mix, McRoberts will go a lot lower than he thinks he should.:rolleyes2
I also was not impressed by him anyways.

McRoberts will go higher then Big baby. Glen Davis is projected to go late first round. Mcroberts is late lottery. Also im not 100% sure that Durant is coming out

he'll definatly go higher than Big Baby. Davis is good, ut he's undersized and a bit overweight.

I think McRoberts realizes he won't be a top 5 pick, but he's a the type of player a lot of teams would kill to have.

And as I said, it's hard to judge McRoberts because his game didn't fit Coach K's system.

True, 15 Years ago McRoberts would have been a better fit for Duke when teams fit Ferry/Laettners types instead of Brand/Boozer/Williams types.

I put him in 11-20 but could fall to 21+. Depends on other underclassmen bigs declaring that could put him down further: Durant, Oden, Noah, Wright, Hibbert, Hansbrough, Horford, Morris, Dozier come to mind. Throw a couple foreign players I never heard of that get drafted and...the point is no matter what his "fit" is with Duke, I wouldn't hire an agent yet.

well he won't have to worry about Morris since he just signed with the Knicks. For those of you going what? I'll make a thread in a second.

Hansbrough has said he wants to stay 4 years, but even if he comes out the fact is he doesn't have the athleticism of McRoberts. Dozier would not go before JMac either, Dorsey maybe.

Is McRoberts even that good? I never watched a Duke game.

his stats don't look great, but a lot of that has to do with the fact Duke is built around guards, and they rarely look to the big men. Every Duke game I've seen this year, McRoberts and Zoubeck (the other big) would get awesome position in the post, and they would never get the ball. The only time McRoberts ever touched the ball is if he brought the ball up, or set a screen and got the ball behind the 3 point line.

He's a great passer though, and an awesome athlete.
