According to a conversation Gil Brandt (close friend of Parcells) had on the radio, he said that when MIA signed Wilson it was to replace Bell at SS. He said that Bell basically signed a one year deal that included a $14mil roster bonus due in 2010 (which obviously forces the the two sides to renegociate deal after 2009 season) and that Wilson (who was our second leading tackler this year) who is younger than Bell and is better suited for SS than FS, basically signed a long term deal to be Bell's eventual replacement at SS.
I believe that they drafted Clemons to be groomed behind Wilson as the eventual starting FS, so I definitely would NOT draft Thomas, especially not at #12. In fact, with the improvement this year by Jason Allen, and him already having experience at FS both in college and in the pros (where he led the team in INTS a few years ago) they can basically move Jason Allen back to FS (where he seems better suited for) to compete with Clemons and the winner starts/loser is the backup and plays STs (which Jason Allen excels at).
I don't believe MIA has to do anything personel-wise to the Safety spot. If Bell renegociates deal, he battles it out with Wilson for the starting/backup SS spot. If Bell does NOT renegociate deal (which after the impressive season he had and the fact that there will not be much competition in the FA market, I believe Bell will NOT renegociate and can make big bucks elsewhere...while Parcells covered his tracks by signing Wilson for)...then Wilson starts at SS and Culver stays the backup.
I think Safety spot can eventually look something like this in 2010:
FS: Jason Allen/Chris Clemons or Chris Clemons/Jason Allen
SS: either Yeremiah Bell/Gibril Wilson or Gibril Wilson/Tyrone Culver
And even if they like Jason Allen at backup CB/STs ace (and feel that Clemons is going to be the starter at FS regardless)...they still would really only need to draft a late round FS to be Clemons backup and keep Allen as the dimeback.
Leave the draft picks for the LINEBACKING CORPS!!!!
