After hearing that Kenny Stills could get close to $12 million per year, I expected him to sign elsewhere. That Miami was able to retain Stills for $8 million per year is a win for both sides IMO. Stills had a breakout year, works well in Adam Gase's offense and with Ryan Tannehill. His skill set is a perfect complement to Jarvis Landry and DaVante Parker. And he's just 24 years old with a lot of football ahead of him.
When all the pass rushers were getting tagged prior to free agency, I thought Andre Branch would command around $9-10 million per year. So the salary he got to stay here doesn't surprise me. I am a little surprised that Miami went that high, but if they lose him who is the replacement and at what cost? I like Branch. He plays hard and can rush the passer.
Lawrence Timmons is in the house today and that's a possible signing. Some have mentioned $10 million per year, which seems about $3 million too high to me. But, he has been extremely durable and is solid.
The Dolphins have to find at least one starting guard as well and, with a lack of talent at DT in the draft, I'd spend there in free agency.
I like what Miami has done early on. The moves open up more flexibility in the draft. If Timmons signs there's less need for linebacker. Branch makes the need for a DE less glaring. If the team lost Stills, they would have to find a replacement and that might have been with a high draft pick.
The Dolphins still should pick a DE and linebacker early in the draft. Both areas are still needs, but it opens up the possibility of getting a safety. That is looking more possible to me, especially with the talent there in the draft with Peppers, Baker and Melifonwu potentially in Miami's range.
