Earnhardt and Truex to drive for jr motorsports in 2008?

ESPN is running with the story now: http://sports.espn.go.com/rpm/news/story?seriesId=2&id=2865745

WOW! I cannot believe this. Either Teresa Earnhardt is extremely stubborn and short-sighted, or Junior just decided, "hell with 51%, why don't I just start my own team?" Can't totally argue with him if that's the case: the vast majority of DEI's value comes from Junebug. It's not like Budweiser won't come with him.

Still, it sort of rings true what Teresa said earlier this year: does Junior want to be a celebrity or a championship driver? By starting his own team, he's going to have some major problems for a couple of years, even if he does lease engines from HMS. Will he be better for it in the long run? I'm not so sure. I think DEI is a good operation that just needs a little boost, not a total teardown. One has to remember that Junior isn't some young, up and coming driver anymore; these are his prime years.

BTW, if Junior really did care about being a championship driver, he'd suck up his pride, go drive for Hendrick and accept the fact that he'd be playing third fiddle behind Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson.

BTW, zachequalsgod, how can you pull for both UK and The Ville? I'm not from Kentucky, but I'm pretty sure you're supposed to take one side or the other in that rivalry.

Not that I'm as big into NA$CAR as I used to be, but there is supposed to be a press conference about this in 6 minutes on ESPN2...

black Budweiser #3 for the win.

and i hate nascar btw. i just wanted to mention that cause i think that would be cool.

I highly doubt you see Casey Mears kicked to the curb by Hendricks. He's good friends with both Gordon and JJ.

I think this is a good move for June Bug. DEI really isn't a great team. Despite Jr. winning at places like Texas,Richmond, and Phoenix among others, he never really seemed to be a huge threat anywhere unless it was a restricter plate track (ie Daytona or Talledega).

I can see him signing with Joe Gibbs, and maybe kicking Yeley to the curb. Or even Jr. going to Ford and signing with Robert Yates to replace Rudd.

I'd also keep my eye out for Ginn Racing. Regan Smith will get the 01 car, but it's not like Joe Nemecheck or Sterling Marlin aren't expendable.

I don't think Jr is ready to make his own team yet. JR Motorsports has struggled ever since they moved Truex and his whole team up to Nextell cup so I don't think he's quite ready for that.

Someone post a eulogy for DEI, they are done.

I can understand, if Dale starts up Jr. Motorsports, that a new team will take a while to get going, but could you imagine Dale Jr. driving a Hendrick-powered car?

*salivates*

If Junior goes to a team like Joe Gibbs or Richard Childress Racing, i'd jump through hoops, but I doubt they're going to sever JJ Yeley from Gibbs. He's still gaining experience, although I do acknowledge he's been here for awhile.

Dale jr has already stated he's not interested in driving a ford.
If i was a bettin man,I would put my money on junior landing a deal with
richard childress racing, and I wouldn't count on seeing the #3 back on the track any time soon. jmo

RCR is interested in starting a 4th team, but it won't be the number 3. If Jr joins RCR it will be a different number all together.

It wouldn't suprise me that which ever team jr signs with, they purhace the #8 from dei..Unless of course teresa is just being stubborn..To much money in advertising the #8.

From the press conference, it sounded like Truex/Junior/Tony Eury could be a package deal. He did deny that, but it was the way he denied that made me think different. Which leads me to Joe Gibbs. Yeley gets the boot, they bring in another car. You've got Stewart, Junior, Hamlin, and Truex.

Personally, when Truex gets offered the number 8 ride... I'm not so sure he'll be able to turn that down.

So people tell me! I root for Louisville against everyone, except Kentucky. I also am a student at U of L.

I know that Mears is pals with Johnson and Gordon, but I just can't see that getting in the way of bringing Earnhardt aboard. Too much money and exposure for Rick Hendrick to turn down. FOUR legit championship contenders on one team? Remember that Brian Vickers was close with the Hendrick group once upon a time, too. Heck, he was the late Ricky Hendrick's best friend.

As for JGR, word is that Gibbs is okay with Earnhardt, but not his sponsor. Apparently, JGR takes a very hard line against alcohol-pushing. Whether they'd swallow their morality for Junior...that's another question.

the Vickers thing was a bit different. He jumped at the chance to be the guy for Toyota instead of the 4th guy in Hendricks, and everybody got scared that Vickers would give away Hendricks secrets so they kept him out of team meetings. Then Vickers caused JJ to wreck when he won last year which pissed HMS off even more.
