Easy to re-gain weight...what about strength and power?

I know some of you might be workout buffs...some of you guys have said how easy it is for Ricky to gain all that weight back...How easy will it be for him to get back to FULL 100% BREAK-TACKLING-DEFENDER-TENDERIZING STRENGTH AND POWER?!?!...Is it possible for him to be Ricky of old...or a weak flexible yoga instructor ? Please Discuss.

For a guy like Ricky it should be pretty easy. It's alot easier to get muscle back if you already had it. For example if a normal person who never realy worked out tried gaining 20 lb's muscle it would be 10X harder than for that person than Ricky. If he fully commits himself he should be able to put the muscle back on in a few months.

One thing I would first like to say is how everyone talks about how weak Ricky is and that he's in awful shape. I fully disagree - I think he'll be in the best shape of his life by the end of this season.

He's constantly carried the ball - 4 years in college and throughout his pro career - as a bruising back. He took an entire year off doing yoga and ayurvedic medicine. I don't know how much some of you know about Ayrveda but it's not just food - it also involves extensive message and rejuvenation therapies. After a year of eating healthy, being messaged, and doing yoga, I'm saying he is in great condition with a very well rested body. In fact I would expect fewer minor injuries that hurt many backs like hammy's etc.

As for the strength and power - obviously your body can be as well rested and flexible as rubber man but without strength and power you're a sitting duck in the NFL. Having said that, some people naturally are strong and their body reacts quickly to strength training. Ricky is one of those people. He's naturally strong and thick; all he needs is a good nutrition and lifting program. Getting back to where you were is ALOT easier than building to there anew. Here's an example:

Take two guys A and B
Guy A (Ricky) has been 235 lbs. for many years and usually benched 350 lbs.
Guy A takes a year off and comes down to 200 lbs and can now only bench 240 lbs. because he hasn't lifted weights in a year.

Guy B has spent most of his life at 160-170 lbs and has been working hard to get up to his current weight of 200 lbs. He can now bench 240 lbs. (the highest he's ever been)

They are both currently the same size/weight/strength. But it will be MUCH easier for Guy A to make quick gains. Guy A's body type just allows him to hold weight and power/strength better.

Lazy1-

I was typing when you responded, you made my exact point (much clearer and shorter).

I agree Lazy1 it is just going to take a little gym dedication. By week six (after the bye) I would bet anything he has gained back his playing weight. It is not like the guy took 3 years off. I don't think of this any differently that a player injury. Players come back all the time. I have no reason to believe that Ricky can't.

Well when he is suspended for the first 4 games of the season...and not practicing with the team or allowed at the team complex I think?.... He'll be training with alot of intensity. Rick was doing yoga... he wasn't doing any plyometrics, trying to improve his speed, his explosiveness, or his quickness. I think it will be sad when we see Ricky this year after knowing the speed, power, and quickness he gained upon joining the Fins after leaving the Saints. He just won't be the same. He is certainly at a greater risk for injury this year without any offseason workouts.
I hope he has a great speed coach to work with once he gets to Florida?!!!!

I dont think Saban will rush Ricky back onto the field...we are pretty deep at RB...when hes ready...he'll be breaking tackles again...deion sanders left for a while he still has 4.3 - 4.4 speed...if you saw the pro skills competition where it was marino vs young on the beach...darrell green still has his speed...i dont think you really lose speed.

Ricky is an athlete.. He was great in 2 sports in highschool, and no doubt has the skills to comeback when he gets his strengh back.. Remember Ricky is a World Class NFL talent when he is playing at his peak, which I hope he will be able to find again.

Uhh, having spent over 25 years in Martial Arts, there's no such thing as a "weak Yoga Instructor". Emphasis in Yoga is much like Pilates, core strength and flexibility. Ricky will be better for it. Trust me on this one.

you know what...i will...thanks man

I'm expecting Ricky to dissappoint me this year. He is coming back for the money and not the love of the game. Ya just know he won't be the same as he was before.... he's gonna have some kind of nagging injuries...groin pulls, hamstring pulls...the type of things you get when your not conditoned well. Not even during the season but maybe even before the preseason games.
Just gonna try and enjoy our defense this year with #54, #99, #29, and even #55 still together for who know's how much longer?

I remember a piece done on Kevin Carter last year about how much he loves Yoga and how its helped him. Saying that he feels better now than he did years ago with the Rams.

:shakeno: You clearly have no idea what your talking about. Yoga is great for flexibility and core strength. It will help him avoid injury much better. If anything he will be quicker and faster because core strength helps your agility. To say he is at greater risk for injury is ridiculous, if he's been doing all that Yoga and Pilates all this time he probably the least likely to be injured. Haven't you heard Zach talk about working on his core strength to avoid all those nagging injuries?

I really wish everyone who talks about how weak Yoga and Ayurveda has made Ricky would at least look into the subject matter before commenting. Have any of you critics ever been to an Ayurvedic center or done extensive Yoga? I didn't think so because if you had there's no way you could say that it will hurt him. Will it take him some time to get rid of the rust and build back the strength he needs ... sure. But by the second half of the season, he should be looking good.
