What a gaffe. Cutler loses the ball before his hand even starts back, but Hochuli blows the whistle and calls it an incomplete pass. The replay reversed it but by rule since the whistle blew the ball remains with the Broncos at the spot of the fumble recovery, back at the 10 yard line.

Then Cutler bailed himself out with a 4th down TD pass and Shanahan went for 2 and took the lead, 39-38 with 24 seconds remaining.

I wonder if Shanahan went for 2 to give San Diego a chance for quick victory, knowing the Chargers should have already won the game minus Hochuli's ridiculous blunder?

That was an absolutely horrible call. It was the 2nd time during the game that SD got screwed over. Jay Cutler was trying to choke the game away late. Though San Diego caught defeat from the jaws of victory.

I totally agree... This is the second week n a row were the officials blow a call that impacts a team from winning a game.

Somehow the Chargers find themselves 0-2. In fairness Denver were 21 points up at one stage and let them back into it. To then have a decision like that go against you with so little left is awful bad luck. On a side not Cromartie got OWNED yesterday. That Denver team is going to take some stopping in that division.

The Chargers got jobbed on not only that one but earlier in the game they got screwed on another call that should have been overturned. In that one, an interception that shouldn't have been, the replay equipment wasn't working so it couldn't be reviewed! What surprises me is Ed Hochuli is one of the best ref's out there, but he screwed the pooch on the call and since he blew the whistle too fast, by rule he couldn't overturn it!

The NFL needs to fix this somehow in the offseason so no other team gets screwed like this. Bad call, even worse rule!

Not to mention the fact that it cost me the win in the office football pool!

The calls got screwed up because Hochuli blew the play dead. The only way to avoid a situation like this is to advise Refs to let the play go if it is close. That play wasn't close but changing the rule would be tricky.

Maryland vs Cal this weekend had somewhat of a similar play. Though a fan blew a whistle and most of the players stopped playing.

I don't think a rule can be changed that if the whistle blows the play continues.

Shanahan was going for the win; he wasn't going to give the Chargers' a chance to win. That's just stupid. What kind of message are you trying to send to your team?

Great point. The refs should be advised that unless they're 100% sure, just don't blow the whistle. They can always review the play and revise the call afterwards, but you can't say 'this is what would have happened if I hadn't blown the whistle'. The alternative - call the play based on what happens after the whistle is blown - would create total chaos and a lot more injuries, as players would be taught to ignore the whistle.

Ummm howabout stopping Denver on 3rd and 4th downs? The Chargers don't have to put the game in the refs hands if they step up and play some D!
