Saw it yesterday on ESPN's Bottom line..

Pope was always the anchor to the USA's Defense. Never a flashy player but he was solid and always got the job done. I remember the goal he scored in the final minute of one game for the US. Pope will be missed and I thank him for the memorable moments and memories that I have of him and the team. Good Luck to him for the rest of his career and life and thanks again for all your hard work.

EDIT - Found a link...

Terrific career, gl to Pope in his future doings . . it will definetly be a youth movement in 2010 for the US soccer team.

Don't be too sure. Donovan, Convey, Onyewu, Beasley, Mastroeni are just a few names of people who should be there and they aren't young gunners (or won't be in 2010)...
