I wanted a cornerback in round 1 before free agency and now I am full steam ahead corner in round #1. We should definitely be in position for Eli Apple or Mackensie Alexander. I think Hargreaves will be gone.

Draft gurus...

If Eli Apple and Mackensie Alexander are both on the board, who do you take?

Who has the better chance at developing into a shutdown, #1 corner?

Who is better equipped to take on the top WRs in this league?

What are some of the positive and negatives of each? Who fits our defense better?

Who is more of Vance Joseph's type of corner?

Here are a few recent tidbits on the both of them:

Clemson CB Mackensie Alexander recently met with the New York Jets and the Pittsburgh Steelers and sat down for a dinner with New Orleans Saints HC Sean Payton and assistant general manager Jeff Ireland.
That information comes from TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline, who added that onlookers were "gushing over the position workout" Alexander put forth at last week's pro day. At that event, he ran a forty between 4.44-4.50 and chipped in a vertical jump of 37.5 inches. "He was very fluid and natural in all his movements," Pauline wrote. "Teams love the versatility he offers and the ability to line up in multiple coverages; man coverage, backed off the line, and zone. Many are critical of Alexander's stats last season: 5 PBUs and no interceptions, but as one scout rightfully said to me, 'He can't intercept the ball if no one is throwing it his way!'"

NFL Meda's Lance Zierlein says Ohio State CB Eli Apple was helped by his Combine testing scores as much as anyone.
"Apple's tape was solid, but there was nothing to really get excited about," he wrote, adding that it included "standard strengths and weaknesses." But Zierlein was curious about projecting Apple's ceiling, which required his measurements and his athletic testing numbers. Apple aced all those tests, with an ideal 6-foot-1, 200-pound frame and a 40-yard dash of 4.40 seconds (along with a smoking 10-yard split of 1.47 seconds). "[Those results] immediately checked a huge 'size/speed' box that is often necessary for a better draft grade," Zierlein wrote

.... think i want Apple just because Jeff Ireland is interested in Alexander

They both suck that bad that you totally avoid the question I asked?

So we go Byron Maxwell/Jamar Taylor/Bobby McCain? :(

Neither is that worthy of an early selection. As far as our CB's now, not my fault we ****ed the pooch and traded out. Time to for Tannenbaum to lay in the bed he shat in.

To SOS's point, I'd much rather have Darron Lee and Sean Davis than Apple/Alexander and any LB you can draft in the 2nd or later.

To your question, I'm concerned about Alexander, because he's short, and his agility tests were alarming. I'm concerned with Apple, because his awareness is hit or miss, and I had concerns about his COD. Skipping the agility drills doesn't make me feel better. I think either could be successful in Miami, but I don't see either as a slam dunk.

Oh, OK! Makes sense. Since we can't land VH3, during the #13th selection perhaps Tannenbaum should just walk up on stage, take a poop next to the podium, and then donate our pick to the Patriots.

I think Alexander is the better player now, but Apple has the size advantage and a higher ceiling. So that is a tough question. I like what Mike Mayok said about Alexander watching a ton of tape and basically wanting to get better. Those are the types of qualities that can lift one player over another. Maybe Apple is the same way. I think that's what can make a break a draft pick.

I was just going to ask Hoops to elaborate on his decision of Apple, but apparently his post has been removed/deleted/disappeared (at least on my wonky computer).

 wow, this thread went over well.

So, just no corner? Ideally, it would be nice to land a good guard in round 2. Take a shot on a late round guy? Anyone in particular?

The board doesn't seem very pumped about any corner available at #13 (I get it), but I would imagine its VERY likely the Dolphins go CB early in the draft.

- Fins saw all FA corners as over valued, wanted Pacman and couldn't get him
- Vance Joseph said in his introductory press conference he builds his defense around DEs and CBs.
- We aren't stacked at DE, but definitely in better shape than at CB. Plus a rotational DE will most likely be brought in.
- Tannenbaum must be having withdrawals from not splashing this offseason. I could see him trade up for a CB if drops a spot or two more than expected. (Ramsey, VH3).

I like Jackson III after hargreaves. With alexander's size and lack of production he needed to light up his pro day ... and he didn't. Apple I've just never been real high on. Him looking the part is his best quality IMO, and you need to do better than that to be picked in the top half of the first. I have second round grades on alexander, apple, and fuller - all around the same spot. All have a shot to be good corners but will take some time to develop where ramsey and Hargreaves are ready to go

But who do you want, really really want? Forget needs, forget worrying abt what wins! Who do you love?

Apple has the most upside of any of them but hes also pretty raw...i dont mind projecting physical tools and upside and measurables when it comes to corner...and no one can mirror off the los a quick inside or outside redirect like apple can...hes got great feet...would have been nice for him to do some of the tests for cod at his pro day but i see so much way off and press on his tape its hard to gauge his off man unless hes bailing post snap...i personally think His awareness is better than hes credited for but i do think the click and close is a tough eval cause of how hes used...most the catches i see in front of him are the result of the coverage played...this kid doesnt know yet how good his tools are...extremely fluid for that size...tight red zone technique needs to be better but i think thats coachable...dont like outside leverage with no inside help you are just asking for the quick slant in off...if anything play it inside and force the ball outside and to your length...hes hell to complete the ball outside vertical to the boundary on with him sitting inside your hip..he gets that inside hand on your shoulder and rides you down the boundary effortlessly

I only see him getting better in the pros with time and reps and i think his ball skills are underrated

In terms of top half of round 1 hes got an awful lot of what im looking for on the boundary...

I haven't watched a whole lot of defensive backs so I have no clue.

The only DBs that stood out to me that I liked was VG, Ramsey, and Karl Joseph. 2 which won't be there for us IMO, and 1 which automatically is crossed off my list for playing at WVU.
