By trading him, we save $5.6M on this year's cap with $4.2M in dead money. We also save his $6.5M salary in 2016, and $6M in 2017. Total, over 3 years, is $22,3M.

Hows does it compare to just cutting him?

Strange. Why didn't we just trade a third for stills? Were the saints really worried they'd lose out on ellerbe if he hit the open market? Or maybe they thought it would be better to restructure him rather than have to battle another team in FA? I guess I just don't quite understand how the game works.

The SaintS wanted the draft pick. They must not have wanted Stills long term for some reason. But they also must have wanted Ellerbe, and I imagine your speculation (bolded above) is correct.

They needed the LB, but even with a restructured deal they are going to have to cut others to make $$ room for him. Rumor is they are looking at their Guard, J.Evans as a possible cut candidate to save cap room. Mmmm???? I wonder if there's more to this than our FO originally planned ???

I didn't realize 2016 and 2017 was such a large savings as well. Very impressed with what they pulled off today, impressive.
