So since we are almost at the end of the season, I was wondering what everyone thought of Mike Tannenbaum now that we are in this surprising position? I know there was a lot of disdain for this guy last year and going into this year, from myself included, but things have actually been trending upward. Me personally I think it has more to do with Gase and Co. than it does with Tannenbaum, and Im still skittish wit him making decisions however, since we ultimately blame him for the mistakes, we have to credit him with the successes. Personally I think as long as Gase is around we will be alright, I think he has a lot of say and influence here on this FO than any coach has had in a long time. So I am one that thinks Gase will make Tannenbaum look good not the other way around. What's he consensus here now?

He is very very lucky that gase took a broken, disfunctional roster and worked mircacles. The d in particuarly is parhetic, lb was ignored yet again

The best thing ross could do for Gase is let him find a proper gm, one who shares his vision. Gase would set nfl records (again) with a good roster filled with talented players. Sadly i suspect he is forced to make do under our fo for a few more years yet. Very sad.

Tannenbaum always wants to make that big splash in free Agency and/or draft. He hit on Maxwell and Alonzo trade (lucky or not with Tunsil), but really gave up way too much for Caroo. I'm not sure he neglected LB as he probably was hoping Jenkins and Misi would be healthy and improved. He did take a risk with Alonzo and again got lucky. We also have many special team Linebackers that have not developed quickly. If he does not address defense this off-season then we will know clearly his limitation.

My opinion of Tannenbaum hasn't changed. This is an extremely flawed team that can surprisingly get worse this offseason if they decide to let Kenny Stills walk. It's going to be interesting to see what they do.

If Tannenbaum is smart, he will understand that his success (and Grier's) is tied to doing EXACTLY what Adam Gase wants. At some point, this will probably start to smart a bit, and there will be a FO rift.

To the extent that Tannenbaum is responsible for any of our success, I'm not sure. The draft day trade has paid huge dividends, part of it being luck. But I think the biggest thing I will credit him for (if he even had any hand in it at all) is identifying Adam Gase as a excellent coach. I suspect he had something to do with this given his role in identifying/signing Steve Kerr...but perhaps I'm seeing a connection where there is none.

Honestly, I am afraid he will get too much credit from Ross and that will enable him to go crazy this offseason.

My question is what are moves that he's done for us that would make you want to get rid of him or keep him?

I am one of his biggest detractors but will give him credit for what looked like a bad trade with Philly, working out very well. Although injured now, I will give him credit for Abdul-Quddus FA signing. Also Bushrod as decent stop-gap OL'er. Also gets credit - as a matter of fact, mega-credit for Branch and props for Steen and Urbik for depth. Howard has also turned out to be an excellent 2nd round pick - so there's that too. Rambo was a nice value signing too.

However, considering other teams were allegedly trying to trade up to grab Tunsil, including the Jets, I can't give Tannenbaum credit for not being a total moron. And then of course there's Super Mario. It's true he was playing out of position on Rex's failed defense, so there was some reason for optimism. So aside from the cap space, I guess I can't find too much fault with betting on the come. However, since this is a report card, Williams is a major failure so that's one huge demerit on TBaum's report card!

He deserves no credit for Ajayi and the rushing game. As a matter of fact, he gets demerits for that. Remember that Ajayi was not gonna be the featured back. While overpaying Maxwell on the trade and Williams, TBum got real parsimonious with Lamar Miller. We're fortunate Ajayi filled the gap[ better than Miller could have (although he hasnt done too poorly in Houston), but that was as a last resort after striking out on getting Anderson (again being penny wise and pound foolish?) and signing a broken down Foster. No credit there, sorry.

And then there's Rashad Matthews. Screwed all those years by that moron named Philbin, when he finally got to start, he excelled and created great chemistry with Tannehill, who going into the season, needed all the help he could get. Matthews is a stud for TN after TBaum again being penny wise and pound foolish - that's except when it comes to Trader Mike trading 3 picks for Carroo who may turn out to be great hopefully, but so far is a major disappointment. Big demerits there.

Oh and while negotiating with Howie Roseman for Kiko (an excellent pickup) and Maxwell, knowing that it looked like we needed a RB, and in retrospect looking back at all the angst before Ajayi stepped up, why didn't he inquire about Murray, also tearing it up in TN, who I believe cost TN the swapping of a 4th round pick going down 13 spots. With Miller walking, TBaum gets red marks for cluelessness here.

Overall, I'd say he did better than I expected, but he ignored the LB core and we're paying for it now. So I'd generously give him a "C." And he gets some extra credit for helping to deliver Ross's HC target.

Quite frankly I think the jury is out because I haven't seen enough to have strong feelings one way or the other.

Moves I liked (at the time, not even in hindsight):
- Signing Suh
- Extending Wake
- Whatever his role was in getting Gase
- Tannehill's contract
- Letting Miller and OV walk
- Draft day trade for Alonso and Maxwell, picking Tunsil

Moves I wasn't happy with (at the time, not in hindsight):
- Trade up for Caroo

The rest I was neutral on at the time. Obviously several of those moves have or will pan out (DVP) and several have not or will not (Mario).

Wasn't tannenbaum the reason we ended up with four fifth rounders and getting Ajayi and Tippet?

I have a sense of what is going thru the weasel's mind. If Gase can work miracles then I can continue to be an a$$hat.

none really, Anyone with a brain would have drafted bong boy! lol. the kiko and Maxwell thing worked out this year (lucky I think but thankful) but next year kiko could get hurt first game and be done for all we know. He didn't address the o line with anyone serious and he thought kiko was enough of an answer at LB. knowing that misi and Jenkins are very injury prone. and then the caroo thing, man... im reminding myself why I still don't like him

ok, good point with the names you pointed out. Branch I am especially happy about

they better not let stills walk. if carroo is a complete mistake that's on Tbomb. but you don't let a guy like stills walk and try to replace him with carroo. Also gase has made chicken salad out of chicken****. He'll have the major voice going forward about who stays and who goes on this roster, and if i'm tbomb, i'm giving gase what he wants, because gase is more important to this team that tbomb. tbomb isn't in the discussion for gm of the year is he?

Tannenbaum has a history of mortgaging the future for the present.

In 2007 the Jets only had 4 picks in the draft as he traded up twice to get players
In 2008 the Jets only had 6 picks in the draft as he traded up once to get a player (and that Vernon Gholston pick was awful)
In 2009 the Jets only had 3 picks (huge trade up for Mark Sanchez)
In 2010 the Jets only had 4 picks (still paying for the Sanchez trade up)
In 2011 the Jets only had 6 picks (traded a pick to San Diego for Antonio Cromartie)
In 2012 the Jets had 7 picks (3 of them comp picks he couldn't trade and his first two picks were Quinton Coples and Stephen Hill)

And we all know what he did last year by trading away picks to move up several times. His tendencies to mortgage a teams future for the now will always end up biting that team in the butt.
