19. New England Patriots
The Patriots secondary will feature some new faces this year after the losses of Asante Samuel and Eugene Wilson to free agency. Veteran Fernando Bryant and Jason Webster will step into the void, while Ellis Hobbs will continue to hold down the other corner spot. New England also added some youth to the group by drafting Terrence Wheatley in the second round. Veteran SS Rodney Harrison continues to make a difference despite his age, and James Sanders is back after starting 15 games last season. Second-year man Brandon Meriweather should be more of a safety, and if he can play with the same confidence he demonstrated in college Meriweather will be a good one.

23. Miami Dolphins
Jason Allen has the physical tools to excel as a starting free safety, but has started just nine games in his first two seasons and he will have former Atlanta starter Chris Crocker behind him if he falters. SS Yeremiah Bell can make a lot of plays with his toughness and instincts, but he also faces health questions after playing in just one game last season. Will Allen has been a solid and durable fixture at RCB, while LCB Michael Lehan needs to recover quickly from an injured ankle. The Dolphins have good depth at safety with Keith Davis and Crocker as the backups. Davis and Crocker will quickly upgrade the special teams units if they are not starting, and Andre Goodman, Nathan Jones and Travis Daniels provide quality depth at corner.

26. New York Jets
The Jets should feel good about their future at corner as RCB Darrelle Revis showed good technique and cover skills while starting every game last season as a rookie. Revis should only get better with experience, and Kerry Rhodes is an above-average starter at safety who will provide consistent production. The other safety spot is a bit of a question mark as Abram Elam will look to improve after starting eight games last season. If New York gets LCB Justin Miller back at full strength this year it will be a bonus as the Jets were forced to adjust to his absence early last season. This is another group that could finish much higher in the rankings by the end of the year if some concerns are addressed.

27. Buffalo Bills
They will be improved this year with SS Donte Whitner and FS Ko Simpson both entering their third season. Simpson missed the majority of the 2007 season with a dislocated ankle, but should be ready to return as the starter, and the duo gives the Bills two young playmakers with good instincts who can make plays in traffic or in space. Buffalo returns starters Terrence McGee and Jabari Greer back at corner, and while McGee lacks ideal size he does have good quickness and ball skills. Greer has better size to match up with receivers and is very competitive. The addition of CB Leodis McKelvin through the draft will provide depth and competition, and McKelvin should be at least the nickel corner when the season begins.

I am actually surprised the Bills are that low. I think the Bills are building a pretty decent secondary.

I think the Dolphins do have some pieces in the secondary to build around, especially the two Allens. I think adding a cornerback early in the draft next year is a must.

I agree, unless we could pick up Asomugha from the Raiders next season.

definitely, we need a shut down corner

Problem is Will Allen is 30 and will want to get P A I D when his contract is up (next year?). Bell is 30 and has proven injury prone so this area needs addressed in next years draft/free agency.

If Jason Allen can get his head screwed on this season then we have a FS but the rest of the secondary needs an infusion of young talent if we are sticking to the Trifecta's 3 year contender plan.

This of course is different if we can generate a pass rush and take the heat of these guys. I think we need to get a shutdown corner and a SS next year for this unit to be set.

true, the bill's secondary seemed pretty good last year... and the jets' has a lot of young talent ...

i'll agree again, if we draft a corner and Jason Allen pans out, we'll have one helluva backfield...kinda like Marion, Surtain and Madison maybe ? wishful thinking mostly hehe but you never know

Not surprised at all....Its ESPN

ESPN is a joke and constantly shows little to no attention to small market teams (unless they have a superstar like Farve)

Funny how ESPN has good things to say about Jason Webster

WHEN HE WAS RELEASED BY THE BILLS

lol....but now that he is a Pats player look out

Oh and on a side note if the Pats had taken McKelvin they would be in the top 15 of ESPN's rankings...but since the Bills did McKelvin is irrelivant

Espn is more weight on 2 veterans then 1 rookie who has never played a down. how can you already know that the rookie is going to be even be successful let alone be the next champ bailey. can i get the lottery number as i can quit my job and relax .

from my pt on view the most effect is going to be the spl assistant and db coach don capers effect on the db`s.

Yeah, I agree that the Bills secondary is better than ours. Honestly, we could easily have swapped 23rd and 27th with the Bills in this ranking and it would have looked more accurate to me. :( I'm one of those guys who was disappointed we didn't draft a CB.

I think CB is one of those positions where you need to draft quantity. I believe in drafting a DB every draft. This past draft was extremely deep in CB's, with good quality prospects like Orlando Scandrick dropping to the 4th and 5th rounds. It was a bad draft for S's unfortunately, but we really should have taken a flier on a CB. At least we are giving guys like Billingsly and Babers a shot, so we're not standing completely pat. Given our situation though, I think we'll need to draft at least 1 S and 1 CB next year.

Our secondary is weaker than most outsiders realize. Yes, Yeremiah Bell is a legit talent, but he is seriously injured every year, and he simply cannot be counted on to play a full season, and is almost guaranteed to be injured come playoff time--if we ever make the playoffs again. Age, fragility, lack of size, minimal interceptions, poor run support, as a whole our secondary stinks in so many ways. :(

You cannot fix everything in 1 draft. Starting with the lines is probably a good idea, but in the end we need to be developing young talent one or two at a time, not 3 or 4 at a time, and I fear that is what we will be doing over the next year or two. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to see our secondary in the bottom 5 of the league. But if we significantly improve the front 7, we can hide some of that stench in the secondary.

The other problem with Will Allen is his ongoing legal problems. Hopefully he can get it all straightened out.

Will Allen will want to get paid like you said, but if he goes out and plays at a Pro Bowl level, I see no reason why the Dolphins wouldn't extend him. I believe, like this offseason, Miami will have a lot of salary cap room.

I am very encouraged with Jason Allen's progress last season, and I do believe he will establish that he is a long term starting Safety for us.

I am not sold on Bell, like you said, he is already 30 and has been plagued with injuries as far back as college. He got a one year, sink or swim contract.

Parcells/Ireland/Sparano couldn't address every position in free agency and especially the draft. They built the lines and got themselves a Quarterback to build around in case Beck doesn't pan out. Next draft, they can go more for the skill positions(like WR) and work on building the linebackers and secondary.

I personally am suprised they have our Db's that high. The article does lose alot of credibility when they mention Nate Jones, Andre Goodman and Travis Danials as quality backups. Lehan is also nothing special. I would agree if Goodman can stay healthy he is a good backup but Nate Jones is horrible in coverage and we all know Travis Danials has regressed.

Blasphemy, THE JILLS SUCK, they always suck and they will continue to suck. Just ask Bryan Cox.
