Now that the Miami Dolphins are officially out of the Peyton Manning sweepstakes, it's time to look ahead to their future.

Joe Fortenbaugh of the National Football Post makes a compelling case that Manning turning down the Dolphins is actually best for the franchise. Fortenbaugh contends that Miami will be able to build the team for the long term over the next few years.
"And while the Dolphins -- like any organization looking to take the next step -- could certainly have benefited from a healthy Manning's skill set and expertise, this is a team that would be better served by acquiring a younger signal caller whom new head coach Joe Philbin could develop and the front office could build around.​
Manning turns 36 on March 24. In the 46 Super Bowls that have been played, only eight of the 92 quarterbacks who have started under center did so at the age of 36 or older. More specifically, the last ten Super Bowls have only seen two quarterbacks start the game at the age of 36 or older (Rich Gannon, Kurt Warner) and both of those guys came up short."

Manning would have given Miami maybe a 2 year window to make the SB if the Phins hit on WR signings and Manning stayed healthy.

Flynn is a longer term investment in a WCO which should keep us in contention longer starting in a year or two.
 
Manning upgrades any team he plays for, period! However, the cap hit has to hurt all but the most already well-stocked teams.. seemingly like SF. It would have been an interesting, likely enjoyable ride, but Fortenbaugh does make some good points. Personally I believe Joe Philbin breathed a quiet sigh of relief when Manning took himself out of the running.
 
EFF ESPN. I don't care what they say about the Dolphins anymore.
 
think about it. News media is not too smart. Thats the dumbest question I have ever heard.

Would the dolphins be better off without Dan Marino or BoB Griese or any other hall of famer that can still throw.

Agree. No question that Manning is a great player but I think he will be a great player for anywhere between 2 preseason games and 2 seasons, tops. Also, who would we have to cut in order to sign him for the outrageous contract demands he's making? There's a reason the only teams left in the sweepstakes are sitting on over $20 million in cap space.
 
Denver Post reporting Broncos don't think they will sign Manning.

A sign that his workout sucked. Or they don't think he is worth $90 mill after viewing his workout.
 
Sure not signing Manning leaves more money to sign other players. Manning is a talented player but putting all your eggs in one basket was a risky move.

IMO, he's going to SF: most to work with in one of the weakest divisions = Best shot at a title. Dynamic HC who used to be a QB vs one who's peter principled out over the last several years and only reached .500 because of a desparation fluke; replacing a Messiah in some fans' eyes not a good thing; an all time great QB who has proven nothing as of yet as an inexperienced GM; division play in a mostly more temperate climate; opportunity to carve his name in the same bedrock as Steve Young and Joe Montana. If the money's close, it's all too compelling to pass up. :idk:

I believe now, as I did days ago, that Denver is being used. Denver has an insane amount of salary cap room over the next two years and Elway is desperate to escape from Tebow. I promise you that they are being used to drive up the asking price. Denver's defense is not good, and Peyton is no dummy. He saw the way they got torched by Christian Ponder down the stretch, and the way Brady mercy ruled them twice by halftime. No way he will go to that ****ty team.
 
So when he signs with S.F. or Denver, are those teams worse with him? Yeah S.F. went to the NFC title game last year so it would make more sense for them but Denver...
 
the niners will probably pay "whatever it takes" unless another team just offers him something "too extreme".i read they have 15-19 million in cap.
 
No team is worse with Peyton Manning when he's healthy enough to get on the field. I'm sorry, but Alex Smith really isn't a very good quarterback. The 49ers would be instant Super Bowl favorites if Peyton can throw the ball the way he needs to, and do it for a full season.
 
Honestly, besides a lot of talk from Ross....it didn't look like this FO wanted Manning at all.

Traded BM without replacement....including 2 wrs in Wayne and Garcon that were FAs. Still haven't solidified the line...

We went from being one player from SB to rebuilding. Sad.
