We hear that the Dolphins' decision to cut OL John St. Clair, a former starter, days before the season opener was an eye-opener to the remaining players. That move shows how unhappy coach Nick Saban is with the bottom part of the roster. As a result, look for Saban to continue to bring in players and tinker with the bottom part of the roster until he finds the people he likes.

Saban has said that the bottom of the roster determines how good you are. So, the explanation appears right in line with that. It was still surprising ... I didn't quite figure St. Clair at the bottom of the roster.

Ya... I saw him as quality depth... but I guess he fell out of favor with the new staff...

i really did not rate St Clair, and, tbh, was glad to see him cut.

I think saban is absoulely right when he says that the team is only as good as the bottom of the roster, cause look at the Patriots in 2003 they had something like 42 different starters that year becuase of all the injuries and becuase of having quality depth is why they beat Carolina and won the super bowl that year. depth is very important

I was never a St Clair fan. He was the best we had last year cause the line had no cohesion. He wasnt the most talented. Frankly he was and still is a decent player with no real position.

I thought that St. Clair had a place on this team because of his versatility. When a guy can play all five line positions competently, that's a worthwhile guy to keep. Still, sometimes you've got to light a fire under the other guys, and if that's what had to be done, so be it.

BTW, a few things to take issue with in your sig:
1. We lost to FSU at FSU, not in Miami.
2. How was Coker's recruiting and development lousy? He recruited Kyle Wright, didn't he? In fact, he recruited pretty much everyone on the current roster, I think.
3. How, precisely, is the poor kicking game in the opener his fault? Peattie is a good kicker who's made a ton of pressure kicks. What's Coker going to have him do differently? Monroe was an all-ACC punter last year (I think, anyway, please correct me if I'm wrong), what's he going to have him do differently?

There may be things to take issue with Coker on, but you're missing the mark with the ones you've chosen.

And yes, I'm off topic. So sue me.

All of the surprise is based on the "fact" that St. Clair was our "best offensive lineman" last year.

You know the problem with that view? It is parroting exactly what Tony Wise and Mustachio were telling the media last year.

They also fomented rumors in the media that Carey was a) stupid and b) a bust. My guess is it was because Carey was Spielman's pick, and not theirs. Regardless, let's consider the source of our facts before we are surprised by the decision of competent people (Saban).

Thats the whole point. St Clair really couldnt play 1 position competantly. He was mediocore at best while the rest of the line was just lost (McKinney and James), Rookies (Carey and Hadnot) and playing hurt (Dmac). So really how well did St Clair play? Good enough to earn a backup spot on this years spot? Maybe. But he was still expensive for a backup.

As far as my sig. I guess I should say not winning vs FSU is not acceptable but space is limited. I know where the game was played.
Its as simple as this: Every year this team has gotten worse under Coker. He rode the recruiting of Butch to some success and this is the first year any of his recruits cracked the lineup. Coker doesnt recruit enough in the state of florida. Its as simple as that. he didnt even call Xavier Lee until Lee had committed to FSU. 1 Qb recruit doesnt make his recruiting good.
Paettie: Decent kicker at best. Hit 64%. But guys botching snaps and stuff. You know you have a new holder why the heck arent you making him work double time in practice so you dont have issues in game?

St. Claire also wasn't much of a fit for Houck who likes bigger guys who maul Defenders. St. Claire has always been a finesse guy. I'm suprised nobody has picked him up already though he may not fit here but he's better then alot of guys out there. Greenbays guards played horrible against Det.
