Miami -- Gus Frerotte, QB
To be a true X factor for the Dolphins in 2005, Frerotte must first win his quarterback battle with A.J. Feeley. Feeley is younger and more mobile than the 35-year-old Frerotte, but he also threw 15 interceptions in 2004. New head coach Nick Saban values ball security and won't put up with the league-worst 42 turnovers the Dolphins posted last season.

With a potentially strong running game led by rookie Ronnie Brown, Miami will have a ball control offense that asks the QB to be a caretaker and not a savior -- and Frerotte gives them the best chance to get that done. Frerotte also knows offensive coordinator Scott Linehan's offense, having played for him in Minnesota.

The concepts are simple: If defenses play normal or soft fronts, you run the football; if they load up to stop the run and give you single man-to-man matchups on the perimeter, you throw the football. Frerotte has the ability to read the defense and execute better than Feeley.

Frerotte's ability to be efficient and mistake-free is contingent upon a drastic improvement in the Dolphins' pass protection. The Dolphins gave up a whopping 52 sacks a year ago, and that must improve, especially given Frerotte's lack of mobility.
