ESPN-Miami Still Fishing for a #1 Receiver

Thanks for the article... my favorite quote:

Pennington indicated he doesn't much care whether the Dolphins upgrade the receiving corps. He expects to win no matter who's on the field with him.

"You have to have that mentality as a quarterback, or you're going to paralyze yourself and not be as successful as you want to be," Pennington said. "To me, that is a huge component to being a quarterback, taking the talent you have around you and getting the best out of those other 10 guys.

"That's my responsibility as a quarterback, and that's part of being a leader and part of the guy who's the signal caller, to push your teammates and get the best out of them and really get them to overachieve regardless of what their abilities are. That's a true quarterback."

I would say atleast 75% of the teams are fishing for a #1 receiver.

I would love a legit #1 it has been a loooonnnngggggg time since we had one.

I get so tired of all this "No. 1 receiver" talk.

Did the Titans, Ravens or Eagles have a No. 1 receiver last year? It didn't keep those teams from being among the NFL's elite.

We have good receivers, not great one's, that I'll admit. But how many great receivers are there in the NFL these days? Maybe a handful of game changers. Just because you don't have one, doesn't mean you can't still be a great team.

Should we supplement our receiving core this offseason, absolutely. But all of this talk of No. 1 receiver is a bit overrated to me.

I don't think anyone is saying we can't be a great team without a legit #1 wr but it sure does help to have one.

I really hope we get a WR with our first pick. Handing a possible legit #1 WR, Ginn, Bess, and Camarillo to Henne when he is ready (behind a concrete O-Line) would be a recipe for years of success.

Good point. Parcell's SB winning Giants team had Stephen Baker, Mark Ingram and Phil Maconkey(?) with Bavaro at TE.
Not exactly air coryell.
Dominant O-line and physical running backs to wear down a defense with a tough defense are how you win championships.

We got ourselves a winning team down there in Miami.

Something you'll never hear come out of Donovan McNabbs mouth! Go Chad!

Seems like our last real #1 guy was Irving Fryar...maybe Tony Martin..but that's about it.

McDuffie was good, but was basically a possession WR, ditto for Gadsden.

Not sure about having a tough defense...We did not upgrade our weakest link - the secondary...Teams will run the spread offense against us all year long and we are minus Goodman...

#1 Receiver

Everybody's saying we don't have, and desperately need a #1 receiver. What I wanna know is, in your opinion, how many "true number one" receivers are there in the NFL? And how many are there in this draft? Any beyond Crabtree? Because I'd say there aren't 32 true number ones in the NFL right now. We obviously don't have one. I'd argue that the Jets don't, the Titans don't, the Jags don't, recently the Giants don't, along with a host of other teams. (Granted, the Cards and the Pats might each have two "number ones," but they're the exception).

Can a team be successful without a number one receiver? It's not like there are any teams that are perfect at every position. The Steelers won the Superbowl, and they could definitely use some Oline help. What do you guys think?

We need a consistent receiver that is able to play against the best passing defenses, or is able to be a challenge. We don't have that type of player at this moment unless you can somehow pull him out of the blue for me.
