Acquiring Phillip Rivers will be an expensive proposition from every angle, there will be several teams in the running.

I'm not really familiar with the situation but common sense says that they will keep Rivers if he's already shown that he can be as good as Brees. Which, from what I've heard, he has shown that.

IMO, it's a waste of time tracking PR and his career because he won't be playing for Miami anytime soon.

It is likely that Rivers will be traded after this season, If Brees continues his Pro Bowl play of last year they simply won't be able to keep two high priced QB's long term, nor will Rivers be happy with that situation.

He has stated publically that he won't be happy serving as a backup in 2006.

Unless Brees performs like he did last year....he will be traded before the start of next season (I'm assuming SD will tag him) and they'll go w/Rivers.

The salary cap hit alone will probably deter SD from unloading Rivers.

So far he's looking pretty good, I'd say the odds are its Rivers whose traded as of right now.

Last week I read an article in which the Chargers GM claims that they can afford to keep both QBs yet another year but it may just be a posturing position designed to keep the trading value up.

I don't agree, I think that they'd rather keep Rivers if it's obvious that he can play being that he's already under contract and Brees will ne looking for big money next year.

Brees IS playing very well right now!

Yes. It was a necessary move for this year, on their part. They placed the tag to correctly analyze Brees' success. That being done, continuing with this experiment will hurt them in other areas. They could be using that cap space next year to extend or sign other players vital to their success.

After all the info is in, the bigger choice will be whether Brees' success is a product of the people around him or his own abilities. If it's the former, Brees will be on the block. But, I don't know that the "franchise" bluff will work in year 2. If no one bites (price too high and realizing SD will be forced to eventually release him), SD may have to eat another year to continue the charade.

When all is said and done, SD may have to live with the $8M loss (??? Brees' FT salary) and understand they paid it to make sure they made the best choice. Without receiving compensation before losing him.

I thought Randy answered this question, we will draft a QB every year. Gus will be our starter next year and we will be grooming whoever we draft next year to be our (one of) next starting QB.

Seeing how we will draft a 'Saban' QB, I doubt we trade for anyone.

I think there is a 50/50 chance either of them goes. Rivers is under contract and younger, but they went through Bree's growing pains for several years and I don't think they want to do it again. Add to that the fact that they've been burned by Leaf in the past, they might be even more inclined to pick the known quantity.

You also have to consider how a trade would go down... Rivers is under contract, and SD can auction him off to the highest bidder. Brees is a different story, however. They would have to tag him in order to be able to trade him. This gives Brees a very large say in the trade, as in order for the deal to work he'd have to agree to a contract with the potential trade partner.
