Anyone closely following the Miami Dolphins’ training camp and preseason should be well aware that second year linebacker Jerome Baker is primed to have a monster season. The Dolphins’ organization has oozed with praise for the former Ohio State Buckeye, often talking about his intelligence, intangibles and athleticism as trump cards that can allow him to be a special football player. Especially in Brian Flores’ defense.

And now the national hype train is getting ready to leave the station. The 2019 NFL season kicks off a week from today and ESPN has released a list of one 2019 breakout candidate for each team. The Dolphins choice was, of course, Jerome Baker.

Something I actually agree with...it has shown up in preseason games and in camp practices.

File this under "we already know this".

Kid is balling out and other than an injury I don't see how he isn't the star of the D this year right up there with X.

I would suggest that he may be more important than X. Not that I think he is a better player than Howard, but X's talents are more that of an individual.

Baker will be the "glue" that holds everything together, from the standpoint of making calls, and communicating with the other defensive players. He's being asked to do a whole lot for a 2nd year, mid round pick.

But hey, it takes pressure to create a diamond, right?

If he stays healthy Baker is going to be a star on this team. His impact will be felt from snap 1 to the end of the game.

I never expect All Pro from anyone, but if preseason is any indication how he's going to play he will be close.

What is he weighing now? I just read that he put on 15 lbs. That would put him around 240. Am I correct or did I get my information wrong? That'd be great if he put on some weight and still kept his speed.

I would disagree that he's more important than X but he's easily the #2 on the defense. Without X our secondary goes from good to bad overnight.
