The Miami Dolphins' once-promising quarterback search started at the top with Peyton Manning and potentially ended Monday night with former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback David Garrard. That, in a nutshell, sums up Miami's rough offseason.

Garrard

The Dolphins have agreed to a one-year contract with Garrard, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. After failing to land Manning, Robert Griffin III and Matt Flynn, Miami signed a 34-year-old quarterback who missed all of 2011 with a back injury.

Do the Dolphins really think Garrard can be a viable starter next season? According to Garrard, he was told he will have a chance to compete for the starting job.

This is yet another wild and zany move by the Dolphins. It's hard to tell what the front office is thinking these days. The plan seems to change daily.

If there is a silver lining, it's that signing a veteran such as Garrard most likely rules out Miami also signing Alex Smith or trading for Tim Tebow. Both options would have been mistakes. It appears Miami will go with Matt Moore, Garrard and potentially a rookie draft pick at quarterback in 2012.

Still, it must be painful for Dolphins fans to watch this team -- which entered the offseason with so much promise -- take itself out of contention months before the season starts.

The Dolphins continue to appear lost and grasping at straws.

It's almost like we brought in a veteran to compete in camp with Matt Moore and the rookie we're going to draft?

The front office is nothing but reactionary and most of their reactions are to counter previous errors.

Or maybe even to have a credible backup if either goes down. Could that be it? Just so confusing...

just another obvious comment on how we went from possibly getting Manning and competing, to signing a backup who didn't play last year while we rebuild.

It's just like the Moore signing. The Dolphins didn't land various options at QB in the offseason (Kolb, Young, Orton, McNabb, etc) - and we signed a decent QB who won't really be competition - just a good backup. Last year, it seems they actually did get one of the best options at QB with Moore, but I have a hard time believing we didn't completely whiff on a great QB this year. I'm rooting against Luck, RG3, Manning, and Flynn for the sake of my sanity

I think it's a low risk-high reward signing, if he can be healthy and return to 2010 form then we have a solid QB for a year or two while tannehill develops

We were never going to get Manning. NEVER. 5 years 96 million are the numbers on his contract. There's a reason his three 'finalists' were teams with over 20 million in cap room this year. Get real.

I guess but do you really think that Garrard would accept a back-up role?

We told him he will get a shot to compete in camp, and honestly? I think he will get that shot. Keep in mind, a bunch of other teams (like St. Louis) were interested in Garrard, but they told him straight up it was purely as a backup. Miami told him he'll get a shot and let's be honest, Matt Moore's accuracy is not anything to shout home about. It's entirely possible that in Philbin's offense, Garrard will beat him out in camp.

I think we're going for Tannehill and the staff thinks he just won't be ready to start right away.

Yeah let losman be the backup...again Moore was clearly a better option than everyone except manning.get that through you alls thick skull...

So the season is already over? Good to hear. I can save money now rather than waste it going to a game.

Agreed. It's really not a bad signing at all, but when you consider he was plan E for the Miami Dolphins, it's going to get overwhelmingly negative reception. I honestly hope the Dolphins pass on Tannenhill. He's not a top 10 talent, he's just a lucky son of a gun that will get paid because the QB market is slim.

I feel like this is no brainer as far what they pins are doing but the media is very anti Miami right now. The way I see it, the Phins have a pretty talented roster but lost as a result of poor coaching and general dolphin luck. Not overpaying for Manning with his health issues and not over paying for Flynn makes sense to me. The team knew everything about Flynn and decided to go in another direction. Which means we look for a qb via the draft and let Moore and garrard compete and push either. And I think there are vastly worse options than garrard who has been pretty solid throughout his career.

To sum it up, be optimistic, maybe we have a stellar draft, maybe get a few bounces to go our way, maybe there are injuries in the division that shift the balance of power that with better coaching, we could see better results....or maybe not but I think philbin will get the offense going

We picked up Gerrard to groom Kellen Moore in the virtues of the long ball.
