Probably because Thomas is a better pass blocker so he gives the illusion of the RB staying in to block, he can then slip through the line and be used as a receiver. He was being used most of the game on passing downs and staying in to block.

I like Thomas on screens. When he's in motion he eats yards like PacMan eats blue ghosts. If Tanny makes a good throw there, it's Thomas with one man to beat and about 15 yards of green ahead of him. It could've been the one play necessary to at least achieve FG position.
