But this rewriting of history that says Elway is a winner (because he won a pair of Super Bowls in his final two seasons) and Marino isn't  and using that fact as an excuse to place the Bronco ahead of the Dolphin as a quarterback  is wrong.

In John Elway's first seven seasons, he was never an All-Pro. His passer rating was 73.6 for his first seven years. In his first 17 postseason games, he threw for 16 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. His teams were 7-8 in that stretch, including blowout losses in the Super Bowl against the Giants, Redskins, and 49ers.

All of Elway's excellent work came after 1995, when Mike Shanahan became the Broncos head coach

Marino never had a running game close to the one Elway ended his career with, with Terrell Davis.

All quarterbacks have to endure pain, but few endured it as long as Marino. His right elbow endured more passes than any elbow has a right to throw. The knees got operated on more than most professional basketball teams.

Marino's career was spectacular, even if his one Super Bowl touchdown gave his team the lead after the first quarter, and not the fourth.

In the end, his life is measured not in the winning of a single Super Bowl; nor the hundreds of touchdown passes thrown; nor the thousands of yards he threw for. They'll be measured in the lives he helps, by donating and raising millions of dollars for the Dan Marino Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is to support integrated treatment programs for children with chronic illnesses and developmental disabilities, so they can lead healthier and happier lives. Sometimes, I think the Hall of Fame is too big. There should be a place where the truly elite can be honored. No matter how small this Nook or Cranny (a hall is too large) of Fame would be, there would be room for Dan Marino.

For the record ...

Peyton Manning may have broken Dan Marino's record for TD passes in a season last year, but Marino still goes into the Hall of Fame with more than his share of milestones. Here's a rundown of the major passing records he either owns or shares:

Most passing yards, career - 61,361

Most seasons, 3,000+ yards passing - 13

Most passing yards, season - 5,084

Most games, 400+ yards passing, career - 13

Most games, 400+ yards passing, season - 4

Most games, 300+ yards passing, career - 63

Most TD passes, career - 420

Most games, 4+ TD passes, career - 21

Most games, 4+ TD passes, season - 6

Most passes completed, career - 4,967

Most seasons leading league, completions - 6

Most passes attempted, career - 8,358
