Listen.
I too am sick of being a losing franchise. Trust me, I hate the fact that I have never seen a Dolphin Super Bowl. I feel almost spoiled from my early years of seeing Dan Marino making the Fins annual contenders.
Fact is this, since we lost Marino, every regime has tried to quickly patch the team up and make ill fated runs with little to no success.
We have overpayed for FAs (Daunte Culpepper)
Wasted draft picks with bad trades (AJ Feely, Joey Porter)
Made bad picks (John Beck, Henne) although Henne I believe is the closest we've been
If we want to be a contender year in and year out we need to draft a QB, develop him and build around him.
This will require some pain. It will take a little bit of time. But there is no reason to start over paying for free agents to surround no QB until you have that guy.
Flynn, or Alex Smith would've been more of the same.
Manning might have worked out, but even if he did it would've been a Favre Vikings situation at BEST. Which again would've only given us 1 or 2 competitive years and then we'd have to start ovver.
I think Ireland and Philbin are doing things the right way. For once we have a front office that isn't giving in to every whim the fickle fan base has. This alone is enough to make me think we might actually have the right guys running the show for once.
Ireland has drafted well despite what many of you naysayers with say. We have a solid foundation, now when we draft skill positions and QBs they are coming into a situation with vets.
This rebuild was like a stock chart. the talent level went up with the Parcells Sparano Ireland 3some; there were some flaws in the strategy (namely they picked the wrong QB), so this year was a natural pullback on the talent chart, shake the weakhands ie overpaid vets, now get a new QB of the future. Our talent level is still much better than it was when the original rebuild started, I believe as we continue to draft this well we will see a super bowl within 3 years.
