It will never happen but the way I think the draft should work is that all rookies are awarded the NFL minimum their first year in the league or maybe even a 2 year deal and be a restricted FA until 4-5 years of service. There is no incentive for a top pick to perform when they are set for life before even steping onto the field. This would help the econmics of the game and prevent a bust from financially strapping a franchise for years preventing rebuilding.

They should do it like the NBA. Every rookie salary is set based on position taken.

something definately needs to be done, but I think that may be a little on the extreme side. something more like that NBA structure would be good.

i think more like baseball

to be honest I'm not even sure how the baseball system works.....I know they don't have a salary cap, but they have some kind of rookie cap?

either way, I'm not so sure it would be ideal to adopt whatever the baseball system is since NFL rookies play right away while baseball players usually start in the minors. seems like the process is too different for the pay structure to be the same.

The NBA system would be perfect for the NFL but to get that the NFL Owners will have to give up something like maybe 2 rounds of the draft. Bye Bye 6th and 7th rounds

this is the part I will never understand. A rookie cap would benefit both parties, not just the owers. to be honest, it would be MORE benefit to the NFLPA than the owners. the owners have to pay out a certain percentage of revenue every year, regardless of which players they are paying it to.

the real benefit would be to the players currently in the NFL, who would see a much larger portion of the salary cap being paid to them as opposed to rookies who aren't currently in the league.

the only people who shouldn't want this are the agents, who basically hit the lottery every time they are able to sign a top draft pick.....it amazes me that they have as much influence over the process as they do.

The average NFL career is 3 1/2 years, so based on your plan most guys would never make any money.

I agree that the money paid to the top 10 picks in the draft is ridiculous, but your solution is even more ridiculous.

Preaching to the choir !
They must do something, as at the current pace, the rookies will end up costing teams far too much money and effectively capping out some vets. It does make no sense to pay a rookie who has not played a single NFL snap an outrageus 4-6 year contract where they make more than many of the top 10 players in that position. Problem is, until the NFLPA contract get re-done, it's not possible. The vets are also going to have to create an uproar and so far most say they don't really care. I'm sure they probably are thinking that if the rooks get so much money, then when my contract comes up, I can use those numbers back on the franchise and get my payday. If they keep raising the salary cap, that also makes it harder to cap the rookie contracts. I think a 1-2 year deal with incentives probably is the best way to go on this. Or just straight up copy what the NBA is doing.

The players in the NFL get paid for performance and even at league minimum of what 200,000 $ for 3 years thats more than what most of us make in 5 years. I think my way would benefit everyone especially those late round pick i.e Marcus Colston who deserves more than a 7th round pay day for 4-6 years. Let them prove the worth in the first couple years then get paid. Everyone should start out at the same salary I believe or maybe SLIGHTLY more per higher round and have shorter deals and extend the restricted FA years.

I agree completely!!!!

This is the sad part for veterans who have proven themselves and for fans who have to constantly finance the 10% raise every year with 8 dollar hot dogs and 80 dollar ticket prices as well as every increasing advertising prices that are passed on because the NFL demands more and more.

I say what about us. Lets stop the madness with 80 million dollar contracts etc...

I think a slotted pay scale for rookies is going to happen. The veterans are tired of seeing all the money go to a kid that has never played a down.
