Here are 4 Qb scenarios that are possible. In each one I will point the good side and the bad.

1. Bring in Dree Brees. The good, of course, is that we will be getting an experienced, young, ex Pro bowler Qb who is a Free agent. He is only 27 and would give us many years of good play in the Qb position. Now the bad regarding Brees here: As we all know he is coming off a very serious injury to his throwing shoulder ( a repaired labrum and rotator cuff). Dr Andrews (who happends to be one of the best in the world doing this type of surgeries) has said that he is doing great in his rehab and is ahead of schedule). This is all great, and i believe him. But i have 18 years in the medical profession and know a lil bit about these types of surgeries. The shoulder will probably never be the same as before. With a very sussessfull surgical intervention it will be almost as good as before, but never the same. In Brees case we dont know the details of the surgery (was it a complete tear?) and he is a Qb who never had a cannon to begin with, so is that going to be compromised? Think about this for a minute: Why would a franchise just let him go to FA without investing in him, even as a safety gap incase their new Qb falters? Remember the Bolts have a lot of money under the cap to do this and its known that Brees did everything possible to stay there, even going to the owner.

2. Trade for Culpepper. This would also upgrade our Qb position tremendously. Another Pro bowl qb who can come in, and because he knows our O already, can make us a playoff team. Of course he would cost us a high (probably a 2nd rd) pick. And as we all know Saban hates to part with picks, specially when we dont have a 5th or a 6th, in a year where the experts say this is one of the deepest drafts in years. Then, of course, is his injury concern. He tored 3 ligaments last year, and is still uncertain when he will be able to return. Then we have to think about his mental make up. I'm not too concerned about the boat episode, but what worries me is that in the worst year of his professional career he asked for a raise in pay, then demanded a trade or to be released. I dont know how Saban will look at that.

3. Trade for Patrick Ramsey, and draft a qb (Croyle/Whitehurst/Jacobs). As far as injury concerns, this is the safest way to go. He can be brought here with only a low (perhaps a 4th rd) pick. He is still young and has a strong arm. But he has not showned the abilities of Dante or Brees. Many people believe that with good coaching (and a good o-line) he can turn around his career and be a productive Qb in the NFL. We have a great Qb coach in our O coordinator. Just look what he did with Qb's with less talent than Patrick. Now the bad....Can he get over the mental aspect of his game that have made this former 1st rd pick a bench warmer? Does he really hold on the the ball so long that no matter how good the o-line is, he's still going to get nailed? Can he be more than a back up in this league? Those are questions that Saban/Randy/Mularsky need to answer.

4. Keep Gus and hope we can draft one of the top Qb's from the upcoming draft (V. Young/ J. Cutler). Lets say we can re-structure Frerrote's contract and keep him here to tutor one of these guys. If one of those Qb's does fall to the 16th spot, should we be content going these route? Gus knows our system and Saban has said that he does not plan to chance this system. Gus played well during the last games of the season ang because of his experience he will be a great tutor (remember Kitna in Cincy)to a young Qb. But with Saban gone public with his desire to upgrade the Qb position can he keep Gus happy enough to get him to re structure? And how long is it going to take the rook to be ready to start...2 years??

Which scenario do you guys like?

I like the last scenario first.....nothing else convinces me....I do believe you can support a knee in place....BUT....you can't support a rotator cuff. I think we should keep gus. If not then I would go for Culpepper bad knee and all. Brees is a ticking time bo*(.

1.As you explain later in that paragraph, he really isn't a long term answer with the injury.
2. Culpepper has a great potential. I agree, you can support the knee, but is his ego blowing up? Asking for a raise in a bad year indicates less athn a high IQ. But maybe trouble was starting with ownership before that and he was just unhappy. Tough call. Also fumbles too much but maybe a good coach can instill some dicipline there.
3. I'd invest a small risk in Ramsay and let the rookie we draft learn from him before I'd keep Gus. Hey, if Ramsay turns it around we keep him. If not, the rookie comes in after a year or 2 anyway.

1) Brees - injury and boat load of cash...could be the answer, but the injury is very concerning.
2) Culpepper - he'll want a renegotiated contract, will cost high round picks, coming off a serious injury...I don't see this as Saban's option.
3) Could be the safest way to go, even with the uncertainty of how draft picks will turn out...any of those three could be busts. Ramsey has all the potential in the world, but so did AJ Feeley...Now many Fin fans are reluctant to go this route because of the failed AJ thing, and there are serious questions as to whether Ramsey is a budding star or just not capable of being better than a backup. Another option could be McCown and a drafted guy rather than Ramsey. McCown would be cheaper (no draft pick given up), but presents the same unreached potential as Ramsey...
4) Gus - I would think the least likely scenario, but only if none of the QB options work out in FA...The one definite thing that Saban knows is that Gus is incapable of being better than he was this season (which was pretty poor). While he has some redeeming qualities, he is a career backup and should be in a glass case on the sideline labeled " Break Glass Only In Case Of Emergency". The team will not progress with Gus as the starter next season. Saban is a very calculating man and leaving it up to the draft to be able to get one of the top 3 guys is too much of a gamble for him to take. Gus may still be on the team next year, but it'll be as a bonified backup.

I choose option #3 with either Ramsey (first choice) or McCown...

you guys might think i'm crazy but i would rather have josh mcown than ramsey. all ramsey needs is some confidence and better coaching {which we have} plus mike mularky can get him ready. !!!

He tored 3 ligaments?...In the medical profession for 18 years, huh? J/K :goof: I like senerio #1.

A potential pitfall with trading for Ramsey is our lack of a 5th or 6th round pick. Even if the price IS a 4th round pick (which I think is too high).....that leaves us with only 3 picks in the 7th round on the second day of the draft, and that's not a way I see Saban going. It doens't look like we match up very well from a compensation standpoint....I don't see Ramsey coming here.

What is your point??
Are you questioning the fact that he did have partial or complete damage to his Anterior Cruciate Ligament, Posterior Cruciate Ligament, and Medial Collateral Ligament? or are you questioning my 18 years in the medical profession??
In reference to my first question he did have those injuries and that have been recorded in many sport news areas. He consecuently had recontructive surgery to repair the above mentioned ligaments, and althought he is apparently ahead of schedule as far as rehab (that's what's been reported) he will surelly need the R.I.C.E. (rest/ice/compression/elevation) post surgical treatment for quite a qhile to minimize inflamation, and possible setbacks. Its difficult to acertain the time it will take for him to be able to come back and compete because that can vary from indicidual to individual. And Im not an expert on the matter by all means. But I do have a post-grad degree in a porfession in the medical field.
If what you are questioning is my 18 years in the medical field I will not even bother to give you a reply to that.

Relax, I was joking (hence the J/K :goof: ). I don't work in the medical field but if I heard someone say "he tored 3 ligaments" I wouldn't guess that they worked in the medical field either. Just ribbing you on your typo...

Its ok, but you got to remember that there re several poster here who are quite young and "tored 3 ligaments" make more sence to them than getting into long winded details. Sorry for the typo...LOL!!

Whatever Saban does will be ok with me....I'm ok with #3.....I'm not ok with #4....my first choice was Brees but if it doesn't happen is not the end of the season for us.

Ozzy rules!!

Well guy it looks like our option #4 is no longer a valid one. Mike and Mike reported that the Jets just traded for Ramsey!

ACL, MCL, AND PCL....those 3 ligaments. I tore my ACL and it took nearly 7 months to even think I was better, and even now 3 years later, it still isnt right. I cant even fathom all 3 being torn. Granted I also dont have a personal doctor and training staff at my beck and call, but man thats alot to come back from 100%.
