Here are 4 Qb scenarios that are possible. In each one I will point the good side and the bad.
1. Bring in Dree Brees. The good, of course, is that we will be getting an experienced, young, ex Pro bowler Qb who is a Free agent. He is only 27 and would give us many years of good play in the Qb position. Now the bad regarding Brees here: As we all know he is coming off a very serious injury to his throwing shoulder ( a repaired labrum and rotator cuff). Dr Andrews (who happends to be one of the best in the world doing this type of surgeries) has said that he is doing great in his rehab and is ahead of schedule). This is all great, and i believe him. But i have 18 years in the medical profession and know a lil bit about these types of surgeries. The shoulder will probably never be the same as before. With a very sussessfull surgical intervention it will be almost as good as before, but never the same. In Brees case we dont know the details of the surgery (was it a complete tear?) and he is a Qb who never had a cannon to begin with, so is that going to be compromised? Think about this for a minute: Why would a franchise just let him go to FA without investing in him, even as a safety gap incase their new Qb falters? Remember the Bolts have a lot of money under the cap to do this and its known that Brees did everything possible to stay there, even going to the owner.
2. Trade for Culpepper. This would also upgrade our Qb position tremendously. Another Pro bowl qb who can come in, and because he knows our O already, can make us a playoff team. Of course he would cost us a high (probably a 2nd rd) pick. And as we all know Saban hates to part with picks, specially when we dont have a 5th or a 6th, in a year where the experts say this is one of the deepest drafts in years. Then, of course, is his injury concern. He tored 3 ligaments last year, and is still uncertain when he will be able to return. Then we have to think about his mental make up. I'm not too concerned about the boat episode, but what worries me is that in the worst year of his professional career he asked for a raise in pay, then demanded a trade or to be released. I dont know how Saban will look at that.
3. Trade for Patrick Ramsey, and draft a qb (Croyle/Whitehurst/Jacobs). As far as injury concerns, this is the safest way to go. He can be brought here with only a low (perhaps a 4th rd) pick. He is still young and has a strong arm. But he has not showned the abilities of Dante or Brees. Many people believe that with good coaching (and a good o-line) he can turn around his career and be a productive Qb in the NFL. We have a great Qb coach in our O coordinator. Just look what he did with Qb's with less talent than Patrick. Now the bad....Can he get over the mental aspect of his game that have made this former 1st rd pick a bench warmer? Does he really hold on the the ball so long that no matter how good the o-line is, he's still going to get nailed? Can he be more than a back up in this league? Those are questions that Saban/Randy/Mularsky need to answer.
4. Keep Gus and hope we can draft one of the top Qb's from the upcoming draft (V. Young/ J. Cutler). Lets say we can re-structure Frerrote's contract and keep him here to tutor one of these guys. If one of those Qb's does fall to the 16th spot, should we be content going these route? Gus knows our system and Saban has said that he does not plan to chance this system. Gus played well during the last games of the season ang because of his experience he will be a great tutor (remember Kitna in Cincy)to a young Qb. But with Saban gone public with his desire to upgrade the Qb position can he keep Gus happy enough to get him to re structure? And how long is it going to take the rook to be ready to start...2 years??
