compete against the projected starters in camp and to fill vital positions. Every year I get excited during this time because some receiver(Gibson/Reed) or running back ( K J HARRIS / Russell sp?) shows up and really shines with a lot of promise to make the team. Then when the cuts come the Fins in the past have cut most of the best prospects . Reed is on the practice squad now and I like the way he gets open and finds space. Anyway what it comes down to is poor player evaluation has plagued the Dolphins for the past few years and hopefully that will change with the Tuna in Miami. What I am saying is do not get to excited by the new signings because they may be gone as soon as better players come along. Players like Smiley and Wilford should stick. Go Fins in 2008 and please sign or draft a cover corner.:D

Every year the fins sign new players to ... get better. I don't know, thats just what I've been told :D.

Yes ,better is good but then do not cut the players that are good and keep the Tillmans around:up:

 Yeah, gotta love the Miami pastime. But I don't think Bill is bringing in players to challange the starters of a 1-15 team. We are rebuilding, More than just Smiley and Wilford will be in the Starting Lineup, expect a new identity.

Funny, you talk about poor talent evaluation, but then you say they cut Fred Gibson, and Russell and KJ Harris? Are any of these guys even in the league? Certainly not contributing. And Kerry Reed is on the roster.

The guys you all mentioned were mostly undrafted free agents brought in to be nothing more than training camp bodies. Every year someone will impress during mini-camps and the pre-season and if they are lucky, they'll get rewarded with a spot on the practice squad. Once in a blue moon, a UDFA or castoff from another team will make an impact when the games count, ala Welker, but for the most part they are just flashes in the pan.

The guys we have been signing should all have roster spots come opening day. Parcells and co. handpicked these guys to improve our special teams. These free agent signees are completely different than the undrafted ones we bring in later on.

We just need to stick with a system for awhile we keep turning over coaches who want certain types of players which means there is always a certain amount of turn over on the team because of that. Something no body really mentions much in Fin Heaven is just how good of coach do they expect the Dolphins really have. Everyone looks right past him to Bill Parcells but if this new coach turns out to be another bummer then we have a real problem even if he sticks around. We need a good/great coach to stick around in Miami the next 10 plus years to really hope to have some good teams. Coaches make the players not the other way around like so many fan like to think. As far as the money being spent on a quality player there will always be opportunities to sign players you just have to wait on and recognize those opportunities and most importantly have the money and cap space to take advantage of the situation. I am not sure how well the new staff will recognize the opportunity but they have put themselves in position with their current cap space to take advantage of them. In the past we have alway been up against the cap and this is the first time in a long time we have not been. Too bad we have such a bad record which hurts trying to sign players but hopefully Parcells is a drawing card!

I thought every position was vital....

What I am saying is do not get to excited by the new signings because they may be gone as soon as better players come along.
I thought this was fairly self-evident, at least in most cases (I'm sure there are a few exceptions where a player is let go too soon or hung onto too long). The only question is whether the better players come this preseason or one to follow.

However, he was hand-picked by Parcells, which, while no guarantee, is probably as close to one as we're going to get.

Any coach that takes that long to have a good team probably isn't a good coach.

That would depend on what motivates an individual player. Certainly there are those who will play for whichever team offers them top dollar. But don't discount the possibility that some players might enjoy playing the role of the underdog or look at Miami's record as a challenge to overcome. I'm not saying that anywhere near most players are like that, but I would think that at least some are.

The best players make the roster for that year compared to other players. The reason why the players you mentioned shine then get cut is because they play against the backups in the Pre Season games, and practice against the Fins backups in practice.

As for the Dolphins new coach, you are right who knows what he will do, but Parcells is there to help... mold... over see what have you. And sorry to tell you most teams do not have 10 year coaches anymore for a lot of reasons. It takes a while to rebuild and be good, but ten years is a little long now a days. You will fine only a few.

problem is in recent years we had only a handful of starters on this team

the rest were backups pretending to be starters.

so when a backup shines against another backup, it really doesnt say much and its really a toss up on who will stick (and really at that point does it matter)

Hopefully this new mindtrust will start bringing in starters instead of backups to compete against backups
