For all we don't know...

  • NFL Matchup explains the why of X's and O's to a T
"For people who don't watch coaching tape, their view of the game is ultimately limited," says Cosell, nephew of Howard Cosell. "Most males who grew up playing sports on some level automatically assume that they know sports."

But, he says - trying not to be insulting - most people don't really know what's happening. Football expertise isn't knowing yardage stats, or complaining that a defender blew his coverage because it looked as if a receiver got past him. It's understanding what every player on the field is supposed to do, and whether he does it. It's appreciating that every play is a calculated symphony of efforts by both teams to predict and exploit what it thinks the other is going to do.

I think most fans know this, but in the heat of the monent we tend to forget what really goes on in the NFL.

Your right, very good read.

This is a great board for the most part with some high quality posters... but this article should always be top of mind when posting about teams, coaches and especially players..... we really know very little.... and we are definately in no position to judge.

Thats a great point and read

There is a difference in knowing what happend, and knowing WHY it happend

The article should be required reading....

That's a great read. Sometimes I wish local media would know their football the way they do on a show like that. Sometimes, I kind of wish I had Jaworski's job lol.

I think there is a lot more room for the local media to get deeper into the game than they do....

I also think the NFL could make "gazillions" if they would give access to "coaches tapes".... even if it was run something like Sunday Ticket... maybe even run an NFL X's and O's school.

On a side note.... I always appreciate the effort you put into your posts... whether I agree or not....

nfl matchup is the only national nfl show i watch. wait i forgot, nfl quarterback mondays on espn news is a good show too.

Well, I also say it should not be assumed that when a guy posts something, that he has not done this kind of research. You don't need the "all 22" film to make observations about guys on camera, and I personally know of a few posters (myself included) who have spent as much time as these guys on NFL Matchup looking at tape...just because we like to.

I agree but on the whole day in and day out too many act as if "they know" when in reality.... for the most part.... we are on the outside looking in... from a great distance in many cases...
