Bears make it official, release Dion Sims, creating $6 million in salary-cap space
The Bears made it official Thursday afternoon, terminating the contract of veteran tight end Dion Sims.
It’s not a surprise the Bears elected to part ways with Sims, who turned 28 on Monday. The move has been forecast since the middle of last season.
Sims had one year remaining on the three-year, $18 million contract he signed in 2017 as one of the big free-agent additions that offseason. He appeared in eight games in 2018, spending half of the season on injured reserve after suffering a concussion in the Nov. 4 road victory over the Bills. He caught only two passes for 9 yards.
The move frees up $6 million in cap space, leaving the Bears with about $12 million in space. The Bears now have only Trey Burton and Adam Shaheen under contract at the position — Ben Braunecker is a restricted free agent and Daniel Brown is an unrestricted free agent.
