Ex Dolphins S Don Jones cut by Patsies

He can't be any worse than Wilson can he?

He is a good speical teams player, but IMO he doesn't offer much in the secondary. I would be for signing him an releasing Rose but he is not replacing Wilson.

Please Miami bring him back. He's not exactly Izzo but he'd seriously help our ST unit.

He's nowhere near as good as Wilson in coverage. But he's a terrific gunner and big hitter.

absolutely. i think our special teams dipped when he was cut. if he can get back to the form of his rookie season, that would really help the STeams.

Ìf they really valued his special teams play i doubt he woulda been cut

In a move that registers as a surprise, the New England Patriots waived safety Don Jones -- one of their best special teams players -- on Thursday.

Jones has played in nine games this season, with all of his snaps coming on special teams. Coaches credited him with eight special-teams tackles, which was the third-highest total on the team.

Given that type of production, and his valued role on the team, it makes one wonder why the Patriots would make such a move.

We've put out a few feelers, but as we attempt to gather more intelligence, here are a few off-the-cuff thoughts:

1. Roster management: The Patriots could still have plans for Jones (if he clears waivers) but might feel they need to create an opening on the roster for another position (e.g. long snapper) this week. By making the move Thursday, perhaps the Patriots feel there's a better chance Jones would clear waivers and they could bring him back once their short-term need at another spot is addressed.

2. Not about football? A move like this, out of the blue, makes one wonder if it wasn't about football-specific reasons.

3. Not related to Siliga: One thought is that perhaps the Patriots are clearing a spot for the return of defensive tackle Sealver Siliga from the short-term injured reserve list. But since Siliga has yet to participate in a regular practice with the team, that seems highly unlikely.

Bring him back, upload the patsies info, upgrade our ST and DB depth. No brainer

I'd like to see what Ahmad Dixon (recently signed to the PS) has to offer. That said, It would not bother me if they brought Jones back before the game against NE.

The Patriots released newly acquired practice squaders TE Xavier Grimble and LS Charley Hughlett.

Bill Belichick didn't close the door on a possible return for Don Jones, admitting he could return to the practice squad if he clears waivers today.

However, Belichick didn't dive into the details of the surprising decision to release Jones yesterday. After all, Jones is third on the team with eight special teams tackles, and Belichick was presented with the idea that he is a valuable contributor in the kicking game.

"We did what we feel like was best for the football team," Belichick said. "I don’t disagree with anything you said. I think he has had production but in the end we’re going to do what we think is best for the team."
