An interested observer who knows a thing or two about defensive fronts gives a thumbs-up to Vance Joseph’s wide-nine scheme — but points out it’s not the first time the Dolphins have used it.

“It’s great for guys like Cam (Wake) and Mario Williams,” former Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor said. “It’s been around for a long time. We did it for years down here with (former coordinator) Jim Bates. And when I first came in, I used to get yelled at for getting too wide.”
Taylor spoke during his 12th annual “Cool Gear for the School Year” event, run by his foundation to benefit 60 children from Miami-Dade and Broward counties Monday night at the Davie Old Navy Store.
The Dolphins are banking heavily on a defensive front featuring Wake and Williams as ends lined up wide, the theory being it will give them better angles to rush the passer. The interior of the line will be anchored by Ndamukong Suh.
“It’s not an every-down thing,” Taylor said. “They’ll mix it up, but I know this whole storyline of this wide-nine thing — it’s about the horses you have. And they have some good players.”

Here's a silly general question if these guys are playing "wide-nine", which I assume, is partly designed to force plays to the inside of the defense. Then how is it possible in seemingly a lot of the preseason games I saw. Players, specifically the DEs, were allowing runs to the outside and not containing their boundary assignments? You're already "wide"

Happens when the DE doesn't ser the edge.

after watching this unit vs atl multiple times and seeing the scheme actually at work I'm buying into this team will stop the run...I think the de's will play more contain responsibility on early downs and the upfield penetration fits the personnel on the dline well

and joseph is very confident this unit will stop the run also...

In order for this to really hum, we need Zach Thomas. Part of the knock on ZT was that we funneled everything to him causing inflated stats.

Well, it worked back then, because we had Zach Thomas.

Can Kiko be ZT?

If Tim Bowens and Larry Chester were manning the defensive tackle spots, then running inside on a wide 9 defense becomes much more difficult. Suh and Earl Mitchell aren't the type of d-tackles that swallow up blockers. They are more Tampa-2 type pass rushing d-tackles.

I shudder to think what the football gods are going to do to you for even asking such a blasphemous question.

I Hope Jason is right. He is one of my favorite Dolphins but he can be a bit of a Dolphin homer some times.
His prognostication skills have something to be desired IMO

Previous times he has spoken up

Those are just a few. Seems like every year he is giving positive spin on some Dolphin subject. Which he should do, but not much of what he says has ever materialized.

if you're a dolphins fan... you could just title it... Dolphins great Jason Taylor...

or Jason Taylor

or Jt99

or future hall of famer jason taylor, etc. Any number of ways, but ex-Defensive end? sigh.

Not to take it off topic. just bugs me a bit.

or you could have just said Jason "no show when it mattered" taylor

Well, saying someone's talent exceeds Sanchez is like saying someone's **** stinks less...

He showed a lot more than Tannehill ever has.

Funny you would say "no show when it mattered" considering your support for our current QB

Agree. If we wanted to get real picky. The title should read, "Jason Taylor on the wide 9 scheme"

After all, they key to effective communication is brevity.
