Almost certain he's stepping down after 10 years as New York Yankees pitching coach, Mel Stottlemyre had harsh words Wednesday for George Steinbrenner and the owner's treatment of manager Joe Torre.

Speaking in the Yankees clubhouse where he's spent 21 seasons as a player and coach, Stottlemyre said he interpreted Steinbrenner's statement following the Yankees' elimination by the Los Angeles Angels as a slap at Torre. Steinbrenner said Tuesday: "I congratulate the Angels and their manager on the great job they've done."

"I laughed when I saw it," Stottlemyre said. "My first thoughts were, `What about Joe? Joe had done a hell of a job, too.' To congratulate the other manager and not congratulate your own after what he'd done this year, I laughed."

A Yankees coach since Torre took over as manager following the 1995 season, Stottlemyre criticized the schism between the team's New York and Tampa, Fla., offices and said Torre's job status shouldn't be questioned.

It's going to be a different team next year. They will trade Sheff, he is the only guy worth something! Nobody can afford AROD.

They need to re-sign Matsui, Get a good young center fielder, and get at least 2 more solid pitchers. I can see Posada going too.

Anyone know if they have Small, Chacon, and Wang signed long term? If not they need too quick.

The rumor up here is the Boss is really not doing well (sick) and that the Tampa people are running the team.

Remember that Don Zimmer took some shots at Steinbrenner & Co. on the way out, too. When Torre leaves, I wonder if he'll do the same. I doubt it, but who knows?

The Tampa mob running the team is the best thing that could happen for Yankee-haters (like me). They're constantly at odds with the soon-to-be-departed Brian Cashman, who's the only guy keeping that team from circling the drain.

By the way, let's clarify something.

This man is "The Boss":

This man is "George Steinbrenner":

Let's not confuse the two again, mmmkay? :)

Hey the best thing for non-Yankee fans would be the exit of Joe Torre and the entering of Lou Pinella. That would be certain doom for the Yankees.

Right on time Ray, bashing the Yanks as usual.....:D

That actually wouldn't be a bad trade for the Yankees. I think Wells is a very good player and CFer. However I don't understand why the Jays would want Sheffield. Also Sheff has said in the summer that he'd retire before he got traded.

Sheff isn't going to retire and walk away from that kind of money. Don't fall for that one. Sheff wants a new contract any team that gives him that he will be happy with. Toronto is going to spend some money this offseason. Look for them to add AJ Burnett and a big hitter (like Sheff)

Don't you think that the Jays would be better off to spend their money signing Wells long term (if they can)? Instead of trading him for an older player who's got 2 to 3 years left until he retires?

Hey if the Yankees make that trade it would be great for them. However I just don't see how or why the Jays would do that. I also think Burnett will be a Jay.

NJ, I liked you right up until I read that. ;)

I dated a girl from Morristown for a fairly long time, and she didn't like The Boss, either. This would have HAD to make her the only girl in New Jersey who grew up in the 1980s that didn't like Springsteen. Should have taken that as my cue to get out.

JP Ricciardi can't possibly be that stupid. Toronto wouldn't make that deal.
